This is the era of preciousness in a culture that has made declaring outrage (without really being outraged) a replacement for serious thought and discussion about serious issues. We (collective "we") cheered the arrival of postmodernism because of the almost Soma like opportunities it provided for expanding our boundaries for theological reflection. What we actual got was a culture that demands tolerance for everything but boundaries and a Matrix like academic structure where arguments cannot be about what is real but about what might or might not offend the folks in our larger networks.
So before one can even consider whether the RCC or CoC or <fill in the blank> are cults, we have to consider how our buds in those groups will take our comment. So, to avoid declaring an actual outrage (i.e. that a particular doctrinal stance is in opposition to Scripture), we feign outrage at folks who dare to make a declaration.
So shall we actually have a conversation about what constitutes a cult and, then, which organizations would qualify? Nah...that would make my head hurt too much and might make my next interfaith get together a bit stressful. Just give me another hit of Soma and hope that the One who has already determined what is or is not truth doesn't show up at the party.
