Good choice. Both he and the provost, Dr. Stinson, are coming from Southern. Typical of the way the thinking goes in the SBC these days, there are those who fear that Greenway will disrupt the whole program at Southwestern by pursuing a Calvinist perspective. At least, that's showing up in some blog posts and comments.

Both of these individuals are highly qualified in theological education, at an institution operated by the same denomination that runs their previous one. They are not megachurch pastors who need to be rescued, they are seminary administrators who will be able to address glaring problems at Southwestern and bring it back in line with its mission and purpose. The trustees didn't use the position as a means of giving someone a reward for denominational service and loyalty, as they had done in the past, and they didn't pick someone whose previous academic experience amounted to leadership of a tiny, broken down Bible college.

The only drawback here, mainly for those hoping that a larger group of minority candidates would be considered for SBC executive positions, is that Greenway, like the choices trustees made for the other exec positions that have been recently filled, is "one of them," a guy who is in the trustee-committee rotation, and has his fingers in a couple of SBC and state convention pies at the same time. But in this case, a bad choice or an inexperienced one could be fatal to the seminary.

I am hopeful that my alma mater will recover and prosper.
