Afghanistan and Afghan Americans

I find it intriguing that the President is using a guy Image born in a country we no longer accept people from (Afghanistan) to sign a peace deal with the Taliban, who were once our enemies (like last week) and once upon a time our allies (like thirty years ago). From what I'm reading, he was one of the authors of the new Afghan constitution, that made that country an Islamic republic. I have a feeling this may not bode well for the literacy of Aghan women. Though if fewer of them get bombed while reading, it may be a fair trade.

Interesting, too, to see the deal was signed in, if not brokered by, Qatar.

The only other prominent Afghan American I can think of offhand is Zalmai Zahir, who is one of the leading experts on Lushootseed (our local language here in the Puget Sound region). His name also reminds me of our King County Councilman, Girmay Zahilay, but he's Somali, not Afghan.
