Bug hullaballoo in Virginia. Threats of violence, lots of ignorance, lots of media attention and...what was it again that all the gun nuts got up in arms about (sorry, couldn't resist) and gathered people, mostly from out of state, to the Virginia capital?
During my previous decade of legislative advocacy, I got used to reading the lingo associated with proposed legislation to discipher what it means So if I am reading this legislation correctly, where, exactly, is the problem? There's nothing there that remotely violates the second amendment. There's a limit on the number of certain types of weapons that can be purchased within a thirty day time period. There's a background check requirement whenever there is a purchase or transfer of guns from one owner to another, a bill that was requested by and supported by a majority of the law enforcement agencies in the state. There was a ban on the unrestrictedsale of guns labelled specifically by the manufacturer as "assault weapons" or classified as such with generous, standard, previously legislated exceptions.
Everything on that list enjoys high public favorability. And keep in mind, in November, Virginia voters convincingly elected this majority Democratic legislature knowing this would be on the agenda. This is how a Democratic Republic works. Live with it or move to Russia where your MAGA hat means something.
