This is from November, 1998. You remember, during the last two years of the Clinton presidency. Author Adrian Rogers.

Dr. Rogers passed on several years ago, so it wouldn't be possible to get his perspective now, though I think he'd probably hold to the same principles. His piece here was pretty much a standard for its time and it's really not fair to speculate whether he'd soft-pedal it or stand by it firmly as applied to the current President. It is fair to consider how theologically like-minded Evangelicals would respond if the object of the article was Trump instead of Clinton.

In this particular case, the facts are in. They can be found in more than one investigation, though the Ukraine scandal is the one that actually provided the clearest evidence of high crimes. There's still evidence from those whom Trump shut down their testimony and in spite of his screeching and tweeting, he was given every opportunity to take all the time he needed to present his side to the House. There's much more actual criminal activity here than there was with Clinton. His immoral past has taken several books to outline and he's both admitted to all of it and not repented for any of it. So Dr. Rogers' words are relevant as far as I am concerned.

One of the ways I evaluate the effectiveness of Evangelicalism is the number of clergy that I have seen leave Evangelical denominations over the past 30 years.

When the people in your denomination whom you'd think would be the most trained and committed to that denomination go elsewhere it should make you question what you are doing.

I know a large number of UMC, and PCUSA pastors who used to be Southern Baptists or some other Evangelical group. I even know several ELCA and Episcopal priests who started out as Southern Baptists. And, of those I know personally, all of them said something in Evangelicalism turned them off causing them to look elsewhere.

I know that isn't scientific. And I imagine you can find mainline pastors who joined Evangelical denominations. But I'd sure be curious to see some stats as to what percentages of clergy leave what denominations for others and why.

How about "Gospel Christians"? That's what the Evangel in Evangelical is, after all. Might be a little iffy musically, but at least it wouldn't shout TRUMP the way "Evangelical", especially in the mainstream press, does.
