UMC Supe in Collinsville

I attended service and had lunch with the Methodists and District Supe Robin Scott yestgerday. the local pastor introduced him as the general conference delegate for the region and a contender for future Bishop.

Had a good sermon, though was obvious to me groomed for the home crowd. Quoted a lot of Frank Graham and Anne Graham Lotz and Oswald Chyambers and metnioned an exchange he had with a seminary proff on the 2nd Coming of Jesus.

At lunch I mentioned to him Collinsville was a top five trending story in the state last Friday over the tea party school supe's refusal to let history club see the movie Selma on school time.

He said he was unaware.

Previous Bishop was outfront on immigration reform. Not sure if current Methoidsit leadership will speak truth to power to the current regime, House Speaker Mike Hubbard and Senator Sessions both prominent Methodists in the state

Here is the latest on the matter. I have a scorching letter that should appear in a regional paper and then I will post online

Exiled Generations and The White Ribbon

In my effort in the anthology Exiled Generations by Carl Kell, editor, I make reference to the movie above. In some fashion you could say about four women in Collinsville Babdiss are in the movie. Would be a great one for Jennifer Wilkins to show at the local Lyberry and have Mark Wilson of the WULD up to lead the discussion after the twon has a chance to read my essay. A former mayor's wife expressed great interest in my thoughts in the book just last week.

Maybe if Matt had shared more light with his Dad I would still be a member of Collinsville baptist, at least allowed on the property. See my story in Exied Generations or check facebook.com/sbcexiles

or Maybe 2001.

I directed the children's choir in Sunday Morning Service. Lot of Hispanics in the choir that year, several beautiful 10 year olds with beautiful names like Paloma, Aracely and Faviola and their brothers and cousins. We marched down the aisle and stood in front of the adult choir who rose to join us to sing on the thrid verse. palms waving. My Friend Dora Stret was beaming that day. She died about three years later.

Last week at CEthics Today I read Catherine Allen's eulogy for Carolyn Crumpler, the spirrited head of the WMU duing the fundy takeover.

Crumpler wrote me an email when I shared with her in 2003 my fakin SBC post here at BL.com. She said I like this, Who's your pastor.

I did not mention that episode in my contribution to Exiled Generations, an 8 page essay that some in the Collinsville Community are becoming aware of.

Allen was present at Feb 24, 2002 gathering in Collinsville that angered Pastor Morgan and his wife.

Last Wednesday Collinsville youth placed Easter Eggs around town with Bible verses in them. Some of them were young girls of third generation families at the church. I was moved by their witness; yet I wonder what part, how much of the Baptist legacy of Carolyn Weatherford they will learn and why it matters?

Anti Christ Ignorance Index and Kurt Cobain

The last Sunday in April reports are the local pastor John Morgan asked the congregation who the anti-Christ was. several mentioined Barackl Obama and Hillary Clinton, both of whom got a round of
Amens...It is sad, near pathetic a congregation that should know nbettwe wrould have leading church members and influential members of the community utter such nonsense. Bodes awful for a congregation that at one time had a modicum of promise as I testify in my offering in Carl Kell's book, The Exiled Generations.

On another front, Oscar nominated film documentarian Bret Morgen, who shot footage in Collinsville Baptist in January 1992, has a film on HBO tonight. He did a great job in an interview yesterday morn on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2015/05/03/403568839 ... ge-of-heck

Molly Worthen, John Morgan and Obadiah Holmes

Recently Pastor Morgan had a piece in the Southern Torch, for whom his son Jospeh writes, about Obadiah Holmes, the great Baptst dissenter.

I think Morgan abused Holmes legacy, trying to place him more with Ala Sears and Pickerings ADF than James Dunn's BJC

In the interview above, by Merritt, Molly Worthen challenges Morgan's assumptions about Francis Schaeffer as the true vine

Octavio to Columbia

My friend Octavio Chen of the China House in Collinsville is going Friday to Massachussetts to prep school in the 11th grade i9n route to an engineering degree from Columbia University. So very proud of Octavio. His Mother is Hispanic and his sister Sharon is on the softball team with the daughter of Brad Barksdale, recent chair of deacons at Collinsville Baptist.

I was trying to route Octavio to Furman where his First cousin is a rising sophomore, but Octavio had other plans.

All the best to this Great American and his proud parents and Sharon.

On another note, had another straightforward conversation with a key player in my dismissal from CBC Sunday night. As interesting a conversation as I've had to date, unflinching and civil nine years out and counting.

Morgan is now the weekly writer for his son Joseph's Southern Torch Newspaper. His column a few weeks ago on the Alamo, the 88 SBC there was interesting for what it did not say. I may blog about that one later.

He is a good columnist though his spin on Obaadiah Holmes was atrocious.

And you can stroll around at this site to see his column on the his recent 45th wedding anniversary.

Morgan has been in Collinsville for about 40 of his 45 year marriage. I think he came in the summer of 76

All this is an interesting turn of events.
