Baptist Vocabulary

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Aug 11, 2017 10:19 am

The hey day of Baptist life in America may be waning. But it was a glorious Century and a Half Run for a Subculture many of us know and Love.

Let's see if we can winnow down to 50 terms that deserve to be known in posterity, Baptist colloquialisms and cliché's shared by the wider evangelical water in which we swam.

To start us off

1. Anxious bench

2. altar call

3. simultaneous revival

4.plenary session

5. alien immersion

6.world wide campaign

7. Cooperative Program

8. Substitutionary atonement

9. Intercessory Prayer

10. priesthood of the believer

11.saw dust trail
"I'm the only sane {person} in here." Doyle Hargraves, Slingblade
"Midget, Broom; Helluva campaign". Political consultant, "Oh, Brother..."

Ed: Thank you Hauro, For sticking with the thread title, several of things in both Stephen's and RL's list are not uniquely Baptistic...
Haruo Good point, Ed, though since Stephen qualified in his post with "Baptist colloquialisms and cliché's shared by the wider evangelical water in which we swam" I didn't feel that he intended them to uniquely Baptist.
And of course I forgot yours, Robert, 20e Primitive!
Ed: Yet is recent years, many more progressive Baptist, no longer admit to swimming with Evangelicals. :(

Thanks! I guess we're mainly "non-cooperative" in the sense of not participating in any association, convention or fellowship, as opposed to being just plain ornery! I think "non-cooperative" is a tag that they use up in North Georgia to describe several associations that do not cooperate with the Georgia Baptist Convention (perhaps William could tell us for sure) and I just appropriated the tag.

We have a pump organ in our family. I believe the story goes that the church (in our community) and 3 families bought organs in the early 1900s. I did know which families and what kind of organ, but I don't remember any more. The church in the early 1900s used the organ sometimes and sometimes didn't. When they weren't using it they had a closet they rolled it into and locked it up. Baptist churches (and probably most others) in East Texas that had instruments used pump organs first and many later changed over to pianos. I think the one in our family was purchased by my g-grandfather, but it was played by his son and might have been purchased by him (B. L. Vaughn, composer of 521 in Cooper Book SH). After Uncle Ben's death (he was 26 and single), at some point the organ was passed on to my grandfather. Later it was passed on to his oldest child, my aunt. She is also deceased, but the organ is still in her family.

So do you go in for alien immersion, or require citizenship papers first? Or is this like ET, where you don't have to be an earthling to be saved? ;-)

We will immerse aliens, but not accept immersion by aliens. :D

Associational missionary

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Aug 25, 2017 10:14 am

I could be corrected but I think that is uniquely Southern Baptist
