Interesting turn in the comment line at ABP on Mohler and Biologos.
Will Campbell included in the story in what is taking on legendary status, Pressler's trek to see Jack Flanders at Baylor in regard People of the Covenant.

Lesson from the Missouri Synod

Postby Stephen Fox » Sat Jun 11, 2011 10:24 am

Two good comments in comment thread of a REview of Burkee's book on Missouri Synod. See also Mark Noll thread in public policy forum of this site:

One of the more uncommented upon aspects of the “civil war” was how many bystanders outside Missouri were urging both sides with the “let’s-you-and-him-fight” game. The Missouri conservative/moderate/liberal fight served as a proxy war for those who wanted an open slug-fest for the trans-denominational traditionalist/modernists hostilities without actually having to bear the wounds and consequences themselves. There was latent sense among all Missouri Lutherans was that it was about more than the LCMS alone.

What is of some interest today is how many wax poetic and breakout in rhapsody at the memory exiting Concordia and the Missouri Synod. Perhaps they were too young to march for civil rights or protest the Vietnam War; but by golly they stood up for truth, conscience and integrity! Nonetheless, many of these same folk cry in their beer about “dividing the body of Christ”, “love and fellowship”, “unity in the greater, essential articles of faith” as many exit the ELCA post-CWA. Where were these concerns with the exodus from the LCMS? Shouldn’t Christian love overridden the theological disagreement that propelled so many to leave the Missouri Synod? Shouldn’t agreement in the essential things of the faith have been enough? After all, just how important IS the theory of evolution compared to the doctrine of the Trinity? If some brothers and sisters in the faith really believed the world was created in six days, shouldn’t you have held them in fellowship for the sake of the body of Christ anyway?

Time has marched on and images change in the rearview mirror. Maybe all would do well to view those conflagrations of long ago with a more skeptical eye.

I think you are right on. Burkee would likely agree; his sub title is: "A Conflict That Changed American Christianity."

Molly Worthen on Nelson Darby and Trump

I remain convinced Molly is no fan of the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention and understands the weight of Cecil Sherman's conversation with Bill Friday. I explained as much to a Liberty U Grad this morning, a staffer for NC US Senator Burr who I hope is defeated when Hillary takes North Carolina when all the votes are counted Nov 8.

Hard to figger Molly as a disciple or apologist for Jesse Helms and Paul Pressler or Paige PAtterson's time at SEBTS with this one:

Definitive piece on Marshall Frady and Billy Graham

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Nov 28, 2016 9:50 am

Graham was a thorn in the side of Progressive Baptists all through the 2nd half of the 20th Century. As Ive stated before Al Mohler boasted of Graham's role in the fundamentalist takeover of the SBC.

This article by the son of the Newsweek bureau chief in Atlanta in the 60s, Joe Cumming, reports the 9 page feature in Christianity Today when Frady's bio of Graham appeared in 79 attempting to discredit Frady.

In my book and the book of most thinking Baptists, Frady wins. Randall Balmer's dustup with Grant Wacker in the piece Billy Graham and the Judgments of History is the latest piece on the right side of history.

This 25 page article is a jewel. I hope Bruce Gourley, Willie Tee and others appreciate it

Thoughts for CN trustee Lovingood

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Sep 15, 2017 4:09 pm

They seemed to have evaporated about 4 hours ago on SBC Trends re recent events at Carson Newman where the devil that went after Jack Flanders still seems to roaming the earth. From the facebook wall of FBC Cleveland Tn:

Lets see what FBC Cleveland Tn is made of. I just talked to one of your staffers about Carlyle Marney, a mentor to President Johnson and Sam Ervin and the first Baptist to give the Gifford Lectures at Yale University. Marney quite likely is the grandest alum of Carson Newman University and I doubt his Spirit is pleased with what just happened there with the BFM 2000 statement. There is a conversation started at the SBC Trends forum at baptistlife.com I hope your church, especially your students who seed higher education wherever they go follows it closely. I hope you have a copy of Molly Worthen 's Apostles of Reason in your Library. I was born in Newport Tn, and my ancestors on my Dad's side come from Maryville and the Walden's Creek area of Sevierville. My Dad's first cousin Clarence Byrd was school supe for Cleveland in the 1960s

Flanders on Furman Facebook

Postby Stephen Fox » Wed Sep 20, 2017 11:20 am

A few seconds ago I posted a comment about Flanders on Furman Facebook wall. He is not forgotten.

I went there as I got a notice from Facebook the following comment re Henry Louis Gates coming to campus and some reservations a fellow from Pickens SC expressed, our exchange apparently didn't rise to community standards. I share my end of it here

Hey Jon Frank from Pickens SC, I saw yo Nacho President photo on your facebook wall. See if Clint Dempsey gets a laugh out of that or how big a welcome you get at the World Cup in Atlanta in about ten years. Maria Moreno in Collinsville Alabama, undocumented when she graduated at my Mother's alma mater in 2013 in Valedictorian is a better American than any cracker in your whole **** extended family. And FTR my White Momma goes back to 1841 in Alabama so tell Bobby (Baker of the LBJ administration)whats his face, the Pickens money bag for LBJ just what a righteous Cracker American you are and Be **** Proud of yourself!!!!
