Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel are in a neck and neck race in the GOP primary for Cochran's senate seat. I'm genuinely sorry for Cochran, since he seems to be a reasonable, thinking Republican as opposed to McDaniel, who is an extremist nut case. Cochran is conservative, but not an extremist. (Haven't seen Stephen drop his name, even though he's an active Southern Baptist church member.) It seems incredible, but the polls are showing that if McDaniel takes the primary, the Democrat will win the seat. I don't think Mississippi was one of the states the Democrats were counting on winning a senate seat, but thanks to the tea party, it is a very real possibility.
West Virginia might also be an interesting place to watch. Tea partiers and establishment Republicans got into a fight today at a speech by the GOP senate candidate who is trying to appease both groups. Pretty funny.
