Came across copy two days ago laying around the house in a box. Hadn't caught my attention in thirty years.
Announcing Nixon Operative Harry Dent coming to Campus Oct 11, it was the One Way feature. Explored the Jesus Movement, Explo 72, Campus Crusade and other issues of the time.
Note to myself to share some of the prophetic comments of Furman Historian AV. Huff and then Chaplain Pitts.
Will do very soon.
Chic Fil A CEO to be Dan Cathy was a photographer for the paper. His brother, a freshman that year with Dan were on the wrestling team, but I think they matriculated the following January to Samford.
Whether family discussions of this issue of the Paladin had any weight in that decisions; would be interesting to find out if John Pierce does one of his coverstory interviews for Baps Today.

Page 6 Pitts and Huff had this to say

On same page as a story about Campus Crusade Explo 72 the previous summer in Dallas.

Huff: to the Question What are your personal views on the Jesus Movement?
The movement is simplistic, anti-intellectual, exclusivist and romantic. It is romantic because it idealizes a picture of never never Christianity. The movement believes in the literal interpretation of the Bible and attempts to pattern its life after the first century church. The movement is simplistic because after 2000 years of Christian history, it is impossible to return to the first century church. The literal interpretation causes people to live like 17th century Puritans. They experience religion like 18th century Protestants and explain Christianity like 19th Century fundamentalists. But they claim it is the first century church. The anti-intellectual view of Christianity is a failure to use the mind along with the Spirit. Reason and intellect are needed to make use of faith. The Jesus movement has been called exclusivistic because its motto : One Way. It claims that Christianity and a special life style is the only approach to God. As Pitts said, "the One Way often turns out to be their Way"

Pitts on Dangers of The Movement
Some young people find out because of their background, they have been denied a conversion experience, so this is a crucial and critical time in their lives. It is necessary to integrate head and heart in matters of faith....I am concerned over people who talk a lot of religious jargon but do not express the caring and freedom that the Christian faith ought to bring. "The God movement is not a way of talking glibly, but of living powerfully." I am concerned that we will drown in an ocean of religious verbiage before our neighbors experience caring, respect, and acceptance....
