Just saw the news this morning that Dr. Wayne Ward, long-time theology prof at Southern Seminary, died Wednesday from a stroke he suffered a few days earlier. As one of his former students, I remember him with profound gratitude to God. Superb preacher, fine scholar and teacher, warm and genuine, among the finest human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I am thankful that his life intersected mine.

Dr. Ward was indeed a grand gentleman. I never had him while at SBTS (partly because of his sabbatical in the middle of my time there), but I always appreciated him as a grand gentleman, a caring evangelist, and a voice of both conservatism and reason at SBTS-BM (before Mohler).

Regulars here know that I have long referred to Dr. Ward as my favorite Preacher. I first heard him preach when I was a college freshman in 1956.

I then had him for Theology at SBTS in 1990 when I returned to Seminary after I had retired from my Job with the state of Indiana.

Paige Patterson called him Uncle Wayne
