The gift that keeps on giving...

Postby William Thornton » Mon May 07, 2012 5:24 pm

...would be former SBC VP Wiley Drake, a genuine nutcase over which almost all SBCers have an acute case of buyer's remorse.

His latest: Former SBC officer arrested in protest

Bob Allen is someone whose work at Associated Baptist Press is outstanding but he either has a Wiley Drake fetish or a pretty well developed sense of humor.

Wiley's nonsense, it seems, we will have with us always.

The only thing for which to blame the SBC is ever electing him to a meaningless office. Even in being arrested, didn't he identify himself as "the former second VP of the SBC?"

Haruo left a comment on my blog...said he was looking for stuff on Wiley there. Nah, he's not worth a whole blog piece. I probably have a good bit here if someone wanted to do a search.

It's not like Wiley Drake is some nut who was elected 2nd VP as a funny HAHA moment in SBC history.

He's the guy who offered the successful motion to boycott Disney - not a insignificant event in history of SBC public life.

Anyone remember the Wiley Drake kerfuffle from way back when in the early days of the Baptist blogosphere? I was in the middle of that mess w/ Brian Kaylor. I don't remember all the details but Wiley's signature was found on an online statement supportive of violence/murder of an abortion provider (whose name I forget).

Wiley eventually spoke out and promised Ben Cole and Marty Duren that it wasn't him. Wiley claimed he's got haters out there who faked his signature. SBCers believed ole Wiley.

Fast forward a handful of years, does anyone believe him now? He flat out lied to SBC bloggers and they bought it. That I am convinced of. The guy prays for the death of the President. He's just a little sick.

Sorry, William, I saw the link in your post (that is, I misinterpreted your signature as part of the body of the post) so I thought you were offering more on Drake there. In this case I am somewhat sympathetic to him, as the Chinese government is being rather nasty with this guy (not that there's anything unusual in that, just ask the Falun Gong folks), but my impression is the US is being somewhat firm on the matter, so perhaps Drake should be protesting at the Chinese embassy. I'm not sure what the laws on blocking sidewalks are, nor how those laws intersect/interact with the constitutional right to assemble and petition for redress. At least when it comes to violence against presidents, he urged God to do the deed, not Christians (as in the case of violence against abortionists).

I will never for get the Disney boycott. I had just gotten out of the bathtub when my wife walked in with the phone and said some reporter wanted to talk to me. I was an SBC pastor, the only one, in a small town in Nebraska at the time, and this guy asks me what my opinion was on the Disney boycott that was just approved at the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting. My reply of course was educated and well thought out .. I said "Is the Convention meeting this week?"

I believe that's "commensurate".

Drake wasn't part of any organized group of individuals associated with the conservative resurgence. There were literally thousands of pastors and members of smaller churches who came back into the SBC and started attending conventions once the resurgence leadership had gained control of the boards and committees, and Drake was one of those. He made frequent appearances at convention microphones, so much so that the general reaction of people in the hall was to laugh when he would appear. He did get a lot of attention with his Disney boycott, which he had been pushing for quite some time before. His church is right in Disneyland's back yard. But his nomination as 2nd VP was made to an almost empty hall at a poorly attended late afternoon session as a joke by Ben Cole, long after the resurgence leadership had any opposition. I would guess, for all the trouble it's been, that Ben wishes he''d never made the nomination, to become known as the man who gave Wiley Drake a platform.

At any rate, your attempt to link this to the CR fails.

How much does Wiley spend a year on his own press releases? He must have plenty of time to do them and send out hundreds by email.

Ed Gene, historically only one moderator may present awards other participants may nominate a post or portion thereof, as was done for John Sneed's comment to the reporter who called him. And btw, the holder of the Golden Spur is not obligated to recognize all nominations.

That is why, when David Flick had to restrict his restrict participation on BL.C. he turned the Golden Spur which was his creation over to Neil H. In fact there have been other awards, one was three monkey award (hear no evil, see no evil, and Speak no evil), also a head in the sand award each where started and controlled by David who was the original Editor/moderator of BL.C. When he and Bruce Started this site. Ralph storm of Texas and I where the second and third. Initially there was only one forum with David and I. And when the ABC Round Table was started I was moderator of that forum William was invited came aboard when the SBC forum was started. Haruo was asked to over the ABC board when I resigned, and the name of that forum was changed. Some where along the line Neil was invited to take up the CBF forum. KeithE volunteered to do the politics forum., And of Course Bruce has the History and Heritage forum.

Mrs Haruo suggests a "Reynolds Wrap Church Hat" award, but she's not a moderator either.

I was spending a weekend in Dallas when the SBC voted on the Disney boycott.

I was in college at the time (HPU), and most of my friends were buying baseball hats with different comic/animated figures on them (like Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fud, Tweety Bird); and I wanted a hat as well. So, I picked up a Mickey Mouse hat; not having a clue about what was transpiring at the annual convention.

I walked into my greek class the next day, and one of the other students in the class looked at me and said, "Trying to make a statement?"

I had no idea what he was talking about, and said as much. He told me about the boycott, and my reply was "Do they really think that will make any sort of difference?"

He shrugged, and we got ready for class.

Man, I miss that hat.
