Hijacking Bonhoeffer

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Dec 27, 2011 12:36 pm

An acquaintance persistently taunts me about the Metaxas bio and refused to hear
Charles Marsh when he came within him about 15 miles three years ago.
Timothy George is an apologist for Bonhoeffer.

Metaxas in S.C.

Postby Stephen Fox » Wed Jan 18, 2012 6:16 pm

Spoke to the Tea Party ralley over the weekend convened by Jim Demint

Rising anxiety on the right over Romney's momentum was reflected at a prayer breakfast Sunday in Myrtle Beach, attended by candidates Rick Perry and Rick Santorum.

One of the speakers, Eric Metaxas, said he hoped candidates he did not specify "will hear from God and get out of the race."

Metaxas, a conservative writer who backs Santorum, confirmed in an interview that he was talking about Perry and Newt Gingrich, both of whom were spurned in favor of Santorum during the weekend in an endorsement by a group of influential religious broadcasters and commentators. Metaxas described South Carolina as "the last exit before the bridge" for conservatives trying to stop Romney.

Gingrich, who is running second to Romney in polls here, told voters at a rally Sunday afternoon in Georgetown, S.C., that "if we split our vote three or four ways, we could end up with a moderate who I believe will have a very hard time defeating Obama."

Timothy George Hijack Barmen

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Jan 20, 2012 7:14 pm

The latest apology for the Manhattan Declaration.

Eric Metaxas has been coopted by the Tea Party reports from South Carolina would suggest.

Will be interesting to see how the conversation between George and Charles Marsh after Marsh's biography of Bonhoeffer is published.

Timothy George used ot contribute regularly to the Baptist Peacemaker back in the 80s. I don't suppose you know what happened, do you Bruce? I e-mailed him awhile ago asking for an explanation and never got one.

I finally got around to reading the review this began with, and one thing I can say very definitively is that I wish commenters wouldn't go for the "Anonymous" option. It makes it horribly difficult to dissect the discussion and connect the dots. Imagine if biographers had to base their analyses (of Bonhoeffer or anyone else) on correspondence between people who wrote "Gnaedige Anonym" as salutation and "Dein Anonym" as sig line? Oik!

Good question. I can't really speak definitively, but my sense is that a number of current SBC/conservative "leaders" - including George, Mohler, Land, Dockery and others - years ago began adjusting or tweaking their public persona to fit safely within the new fundamentalist paradigm of SBC life. Land remains an interesting case study; every once in a while he gets off the reservation a bit by espousing positions that are a bit to the left of fundamentalism, only to get reigned in by the powers that be.

Seems to me I recall George participating a bit on the bpfna mailing list (not in the Peacemaker per se) more recently (maybe early in this millennium) and it sounded to me like he was feeling unwelcome because of the organization's pro-gay position.

Bonhoeffer and Timothy George

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:51 pm

George Judson speech was possibly not concocted with malice but like the Bama Immigration law, the unintended consequences cannot go unnoticed.
I have been rereading MRobinson on Dietrich again lately. George misses the point. Bonhoeffer rightly understood has implications not only for the lack of insight of George, but for the obfuscation folks like George and Metaxas give Casey Mattox and his recent ADF American Thinker blog on Margaret Sanger.
This American Life feature on Alabama Immigration and Kris Kobach puts it in sharp relief. I'm still thinking through it but it's way passed serious and Rick Lance and the Bama SBC continues to whistle Dixie.

Another inoculation against Timothy George and the Judson Lecture. George must speak out against Kris Kobach and Eunie Smith, Scott Beason and Gov Bentley in light of NPR This American Life expose
