His ending question should lead the Rome News Tribune to ask him more questions about President Obama; maybe in the Presence of Isabel Wilkerson whose world was shaped in part by the Thankful Baptist Church in Rome, Ga, about two miles from the Shorter Campus

And in the presence of Cynthia Tucker, good friend of Ethicsdaily.com and acquainted with Wayne Flynt who has serious reservations about Price and his fundamentalism in the SBC

I think it fair again, to ask with his association with Larry McDonald just what is Price's estimation of Martin Luther King, Jr. and what was his pilgrimage in that regard.

It should be noted Price preached the Inaugural Sermon for Jimmy Carter in 1977; so Carter's assessment of Price's role in the SBC should be a no brainer as Shorter's reputation spirals downward

I read most of it today in a nearby bookstore. I don't have a copy in front of me now. Phenomenal piece of work. Bruce Gourley, Dr. Undrwood, Samford's Westmoreland and John Pierce should have a copy ordered if there aren't already two copies in the Mercer Library.
I hope John Pierce arranges for Tony Cartledge to interview Giberson when he comes to Monroe, N.C. in mid March, hoping Tony has mastered the book by then. This one deserves full treatment is Baps Today; and Carledge would be great given his experience with the Biblical Recorder.
Giberson and Stephens have chapters on Ken Ham of Creation Designs; Lahaye, David Barton and the Wallbuilders. One of the more fascinating chapters follows the pilgrimage of a fellow raised in the Prince Avenue SBC church in Athens Ga and as a bright HS sophomore goes to Bryan College in Dayton Tn where he is slowly activated into more thinking. Inerrancy doesn't pan out for this bright kid and the tensions along the way and their attempts to resolve them with his parents and Prince Avenue should go right to the heart of what Nelson Price is attempting to stifle at Shorter.
It doesn't pan out.
The last chapter does a great job about the ghosts of Billy Sunday, and how common folk America that populate many of the 150 member SBC Churches keep folks like Nelson Price in business as they challenge higher education in the vein of Jerry Vines sermon in St.Louis in 87, the one my Mother walked out on.

I would hope Aaron Weaver will have Baylor folks looking at the Anointed as well. The new President at Baylor, though I don't think it was the best choice, is worlds away from what Price is doing at Shorter.
And FTR, the three page treatment of Al Mohler in The Anointed is one of the best I have seen to date confirming Molly Marshall's reservations about his "brilliance".

[b]The trouble with talking about socialism is that not many folks really grasp its history and ramifications. You all really should set under one of the theoreticians of world communism (perhaps that should read socialism), the one who showed Max Weber up by proving that capitalism really began with the founding of the city of Venice in the 4th century a.d. I refer to Dr. Oliver Cromwell Cox, Ph.D., Univ. of Chicago, who taught Sociology at Lincoln Univ. All of the students in the class at Lincoln (Black and White) thought he was, and I wrote a paper critiquing communism as the creation of a new class, more greedy and rapacious than any in history, because it was basically unconscious of its enormous powers that, due to human nature, were always being perverted to that end. The students views of the good doctor were confirmed by two scholars in different ways. One Dr. N.B. Magruder of the old Magruder family of the South, had a Masters from Yale and one from Columbia (he was invited to join the communist conspiracy while a student there, but, after a terrible depression refused) (and a Ph.D. from Southern) declared that the gentleman in question was a theoretician of world communism. While teaching at South Carolina State, I met a Black Sociologist from Princeton who confirmed that the professor at Lincoln was "one of the unsung heroes of Marxianism." In '90 our son was a student at UNC-CH. He laid a course syllabus on Marxian Theorists before me and said, "Dad, I'm going to study you professor." There in the middle of the course outline for the semester was listed the name of my professor at LIncoln. I said all of that to say this; Having attended 10 diffferent colleges and universities above the secondary level, and having had a number of socialists, including Fabian as well as Marxian socialists (with some other varieties thrown in for good measure, I have a pretty good idea of what constitutes socialism. I also know of the tie-ins between the various socialists. It pains me to say, that the present administration is quite on track with a socialist agenda, and, lest any should think I was playing favorites, the same stuff is coming from the Republicans, all too often, too. And that inspite of the fact that the average American citizen doesn't want socialism (These days the average can study the effects on the internet in most countries where it is in effect and yuck! I rather be free.), but certain banking groups want it, because it offers more control over the average John Doe, the "useless eaters" as H.G. Wells' called them in the plural in his little work, The Open Conspiracy, which advocated the extermination of such by folks flying around in blimps or helicopters or planes (I forget which), and Wells was a member of the original circle of Fabians in England. So maybe Dr. Price might not know a great deal about socialists, but who does in these days of visual entertainment and a pathetic lack of willingness to do hard research. Still, he was not far off the target. Not as far as portrayed.

Dr. Willingham. It is true I brought up the topic in re Nelson Price's blog he has set up as a non profit so He can take donations; but I hope Dr. Thornton will take your long treatise and move it to Public Policy and we can pursue it there.
Of course I am not the monitor of this Forum so this is just a suggestion.
I know from being the recipient of many of your emails you have an active network there in N.C.; I am hoping one of your friends can get a copy of the Anointed to you soon and you can have a group reading to update some of your treatises.
But here on the last day of the year, I affirm your conviction and piety, even though I take exception to a lot of its implementation in the public square. More likely the onus is not on your but on folks who spin and traffic your thoughts to unintended effect

I am almost certain the blog above was linked before, but it is interesting to read again the 20 comments on the blog as well as reread the blog almost two months later.

Keep an eye on the letters columns to the Rome News Tribune. Could be some interesting thoughts in the print issue yet to come

Aside from the fact that all of this is really a moot point, since it has been ruled that the Georgia Baptist Convention is the sole member of Shorter University and therefore has the right to elect 100% of its trustees, I don't think that what Nelson Price believes about socialism is relevant to the issue here. The trustees are expressing the convention's desires with regard to their school. And as I have said all along here in this discussion, that's where change must occur, if it is to happen at all.

The voices raised in protest against the direction Shorter's trustees have decided to go are few, represent a very small minority among Georgia Baptists and apparently even among Shorter's alumni, and are futile. Now what it looks like you're doing, Stephen, is working to undermine the character of Nelson Price. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish, since the only path to change is through the GBC annual meeting. Petitions and pitting Nelson Price's website against Religion Dispatches is not productive, and unless you're east of the border, I don't think you'll be a messenger at the next GBC annual meeting.

I beg to differ. Nelson Price is in process of having himself appointed special counsel to the President of Shorter for life, now that he can no longer rule as Chair of the Trustees.
Several folks of good will say this is a teachable moment for the folks of Floyd Countyin particular and the vast number of folks who stay in SBC churches cause they don't want to cause a stir. Little by little many of their heads are turned, not to March or Occupy Shorter, but incrementally to come to their wits.
Again, as a friend, you need to read The Anointed, cause you for all your communication skills are out to lunch on the wider implications of a man likeNelson Price for the character of the region.
There I go with Randall Lolley, Cecil Sherman and William Friday who saw it with the fundy takeover of SEBTS for the character of N.C. in particular. And to understand that, it is aint rocket science to see it all as part of a pattern latest emanantion of which is the Art Pope artlcle about two months ago in New Yorker.
