A column in the local paper where Jerry Vines was twice pastor caught my eye on a visit Sept 4. Dick Yarborough had an aside on Mohler. It got me thinking, some thoughts I have shared before, butin a new light and part of my spiritual biography.

Mohler column Link

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Sep 12, 2011 2:53 pm

Dick Yarborough apparently is syndicated in mostly Georgia papers, including Lamar Wadsworth Rockmart Journal. I hope Lamar will join me and submit a letter.

Collate this discussion with my post on Doug Carver as Carver is a Floyd County product, in this twice burned over district. Pockets like that all around, Greenville, County S.C. with Bob Jones and Frank Page and Jim Demint's Redeemer Prez PCA being another; Floyd County home of Shorter trustee Nelson Price, Vines twice pastored West Rome; FBC Rome which is now associated with the State Conventions of New York and Virginia If I am not mistaken, and where they like to vote women pastors out, while West Rome's Susan Shaw writes about her Mother's Sunday School Class.

And now Dick jumps in:

Furman Lecture on Tea Parties

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Sep 19, 2011 10:08 pm

Furman Proff James Guth will be speaking about Tea Parties as part of Furman's Downtown lecture series in Greenville, S.C. Weds.
Whether he mentions the close relationship of Jim Demint to SBC's Frank Page is yet to be seen.

Mohler to Calvin college: "Arbitrary and Insulting"

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu Sep 22, 2011 3:41 pm

Mohler knows no bounds. Shout out to Dave Miller in particular in re some discussion on SBC Voices of a Year Ago about Inerrancy and the SBC Takeover
Ironically beyond imagination, Mohler now at odds with Calvin College over the First 11 chapters of Genesis. the same subject Patterson and Adrian Rogers walked away from at the Inerrancy conference of the SBC at Ridgecrest in 1987

http://www.npr.org/2011/09/22/140710361 ... an-origins

Discussion live and ongoing as I am writing this.

Nelson Price, once considered a candidate for the SBC, now a Driving influence at Shorter College in Rome, Ga.; as a matter of academic integrity should have Rachel Held Evans of nearby Dayton, Tn, Author of Evovling in Monkeytown and a darling and rightly so of Marion Aldridge of the CBF; Have Evans at Shorter with Mohler and Boykin soon to see where all this goes.

Maybe Dick Yarborough will be there for another column

Mohler guest column in Nov 12 Sunday Rome News on Shorter

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Nov 14, 2011 8:14 pm

I make reference to it hear in this comment on Howell Scott's Paterno blog:

Stephen Fox says:
November 14, 2011 at 5:11 PM
I commented at Jim Denison’s thoughts on this matter today at abpnews.com if anybody wants to check. I don’t have the wisdom of Solomon on this matter. A woman from Penn had strong reaction to one of Christa Brown’s comments not long ago, and I am not sure Mohler was as judgmental of the situation in Dallas with the noted SBC preacher as he was with Paterno.
On other matters it is interesting to note Pat Dye on an ESPN documentary last night about Bama and Auburn said there are no lilly white programs at the Upper levels of NCAA football. Any of you who want to explore that comment thoroughly should read Wayne Flynt’s new book Keeping the Faith, a book endorsed by To Kill a Mockingbird’s author Harper Lee herself; and Pulitzer winner Rick Bragg.
My problem with Mohler is though he has an easily googled column in recent Rome News Tribune about Shorter College and the Nelson Price led fundamentalist takeover there, he did not bring his notorious pr skills to bear on the recent personhood amendment in Mississippi; nor is there any indication he is familiar with the writings of Cynthia Gorney on the matter, nor with Barry Goldwater’s service to Planned Parenthood, nor the Jill Lepore piece in last week’s new Yorker and conversation Veteran’s Day on NPR’s Diane Rehm show.
So in my book Mohler continues to be overrated, carries none of the water Gorney or marilynne Robinson carries in these matters.
All that said, mixxing apples and oranges a little, intense but friendly conversation between Chip and the other fellow on ESPN take two this afternoon about the ongoing saga of Tim Tebow in the NFL.
Oh, a fellow above mentioned Fireproof’s Courageous. Light movie going as far as my book goes, but no harm for children. Adults including Al Mohler since he comments where a lot of adults go, should engage Vera Farmiga and Carolyn Briggs and the Movie Higher Ground.
Now that would be interesting indeed. Have Briggs and Rachel Held Evans on campus with Mohler and Russ Moore in panel discussion.
Let me know if that one takes traction

My response to Mohler on Shorter

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Nov 14, 2011 8:57 pm

My attempted online response to Mohler's Sunday column on Shorter in Rome News Tribune
According to Baylor's Barry Hankins book Uneasy in Babylon PCA and righwing pastor D.J Kennedy was big influence on a young Al Mohler. Hankins also reveals noted ethicist David Gushee and Carey Newman said of Mohler's Covenant agreement days early in his new presidency of Southern Seminary 1990's God is not in this place.
Newman and Gushee talked of some nebulous obscure shadow force that seemed to be jerking Mohler's strings at Southern.
From a Mark Noll review of Dochuk and Williams highly celebrated new book on religious right including lots of ink on the forces that brought Mohler to power in the SBC, those forces include the John Birch Society and vestiges of the Texas Regulars that LBJ locked horns with in Texas as far back as 1948.
And Harper Lee of To Kill a Mockingbird endorses Wayne Flynt's new book Keeping the Faith that among many matters examines the Alabama installment of Al Mohler's faith world and finds them at odds from everyone from John Grisham to Hugo Black's grandson Stephen, to the legacy of Martin King to what was best about Bama Governor Brewer as he fought the worst of Wallace.
So in Al Mohler when push comes to shove you find an apologist in the politial realm for the worst of Karl Rove; or one who like Pontius Pilate say on immigration reform is silent or looks the other way.
On abortion Mohler cannot engage Cynthia Gorney not to mention Gushee.
As for Mercer and Underwood, that battle was fought at Baylor in 2004 and Mother Jones cooked Mohler and Nelson Price's goose in an easily googled article there.
If that is not enough, the world is waiting for Al Mohler to invite Carolyn Briggs and Vera Farmiga of Higher Ground to Louisville, to on panel with Gus Niebuhrn and Rachel Held Evans of Evolving in Monkeytown to discuss the World Al has wrought.
God Bless Yall.

And this submission to Russ Moore's recent blog

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:23 pm

on Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan

Russell:
Times are changin at Shorter College in Rome, Ga for sure; as Al Mohler’s guest column and a companion piece by Pierre Noth in the Rome News Tribune pages attest.
I have submitted a letter there I hope RNT will publish soon where I mention an Inquistion of Samford’s Tom Corts by friends of the late Albert Lee Smith I witnessed in 93, Samford, Mohler’s alma mater.
Sea Change as one letter writer put it. And an opera singer, Shorter educated now with Chicago lyric chorale has weighed in and she is not happy.

As for Bob Dylan one of the more interesting items I have come across on him is a chapter in a recent book that looks exhaustively at Dylan’s version of the Sacred Harp Number the Lone Pilgrim and traces it back to Barton Stone.
Fascinating exploration.
Don’t drop Johnny Cash’s name lightly. I doubt he would be happy with what is going on at Shorter, and Jim Henry’s daughter Kate Campbell and her friends Roseanne Cash and Emmy Lou Harris would be appalled.
I am confident of that.
Not foreign to the teachings of Scripture or thinking on original sin be hard for me to imagine like our mutual acquaintance Vicki Covington any of them would put much stock in current mindset of Southern Seminary.
But I do like what you said about Bob Dylan. His son Sam Dylan once studied my visage on footage of a documentary whose director later became an Oscar nominee.
Sam Dylan and Stephen Fox, both in the credits of a 92 work.

Fellowship Baptist Rome sides with Nelson Price

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Nov 18, 2011 5:47 pm

In Rome News Tribune letter easily googled.

Here is my response published online in that comment stream:

First I'm Afraid Dr. Dowles is Not "The One"; that would be Nelson Price, failed candidate for the Presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention scuttlebutted to be in process of appointing himself lifelong counselor to Shorter President since he can no longer serve as Trustee.
Reputedly Price took over the Trustee meeting last Friday after the "somber" inauguration of Prez Dowles and said things were full steam ahead in the fundamentalist takeover of Shorter.
Here is what Yale proff Harold Bloom said of Price's brand of SBC fundamentalism a few days ago in the NY Times:

As for his preference, Bloom, who is Jewish, observed: “Mormonism’s best inheritance from Joseph Smith was his passion for education, hardly evident in the anti-intellectual and semi-literate Southern Baptist Convention. I wonder though which is more dangerous, a knowledge-hungry religious zealotry or a proudly stupid one? Either way we are condemned to remain a plutocracy and oligarchy. I can be forgiven for dreading a further strengthening of theocracy in that powerful brew.”

See full story at abpnews.com on Mitt Romney and Mormonism.

Price is a disaster, more in common with Jesse Helms and the John Birch Society than with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Diarmaid MacCulloch in his magisterial History of Christianity says Price brand of know nothing religion is junk formed about 1890 that had just about run its course with most folks by the Scopes trial and the lynching of Leo Frank about two miles from where Price held court longtime 30 or so years later at Roswell Street.
Don't take my word, see the Mark Noll review in June 6 New Republic of WEst Ga proff Dan Williams and separate writings of Dan Dochuk.
Fellowship Baptist Church and West Rome, seekers of truth they profess to be should with Shorter host Rachel Held Evans of Dayton, Tn, and Carolyn Briggs of the movie Higher Ground.
Fly Almighty Al Mohler into town.
Let's get on with it in this teachable moment and see if Jesus Christ in fact has more in common with Martin King and Oscar Romero than he has with Newt Gingrich and Larry Macdonald; Jimmy Carter than Karl Rove; and Barbara Brown Taylor and Fleming Rutledge and Will Willimon than Nelson Price and Al Mohler.
Amen and Amen

And this comment at ABP news re Baylor

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:09 pm

The bigger controversy is in the comment streams of intense and active columns and letters easily googled at Rome News Tribune on Nelson Price's takeover of Shorter College.
Shorter grads and trustees from LA Actor to Chicago Lyric Opera singer from Armuchee; from CBF's Rob Nash to the Almighty Al Mohler have commented in the Rome Tribune.
Nelson Price, the pastor to Larry Macdonald has set a course and hired PR firm of Art Demoss, long time associate in these matters of Charles Stanley to cement the course they have set on one of Rome Ga's once shining hills.
Good luck at Baylor. Still fighting Darwin and the first 11 chapters of Genesis at Shorter.
I can't imagine Shorter will be inviting Carolyn Briggs of Higher Ground, Rachel Held Evans of Evolving in Monkeytown or joining in group discussion of the grand movie The White Ribbon anytime soon.
No if you didn't learn it at West Rome Sunday School during the Jerry Vines administration, you ain't gonna learn nothin to challenge it at Shorter College now as long as Nelson Price has breath.

Dale Levan and Carey Ingram

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Nov 18, 2011 7:13 pm

Have weighed in with column and letter publications inthe Rome News Tribune

Check the comments that follow once you google the Rome News Tribune.

Levan is Sr. Pastor of Fellowship BC in Rome which may now surpass Jerry Vines old nearby West Rome in average Sunday Morn attendance, and Carey Ingram is Floyd County Baptist Associational Director.

Nelson Price and the Shorter Trustees have hired Charles Stanley's friend Art Demoss to hit the PR hard for them and passed out talking points in the two hour trustee meeting that followed Dowles Inauguration last Friday.

Here is a comment I left Ingram:

Rev. Ingram:
I appreciate the gracious spirit in which you expressed yourself here.
But Christians from the Religion faculty at Furman, to recent Samford President Tom Corts--Al Mohler's alma mater--to Mercer's Underwood--google the Mother Jones piece on his experience at Baylor in 2004 have been challenged by the fundamentalism Pierre Noth spotlighted in his recent column on Shorter zeroing in on the Inerrancy guideline.
I have gotten to it best I can in my comment in the Fellowship Pastor's comment line.
The John Birch Society and the fundamentalism of the Southern Baptist Convention is not conducive to the best liberal arts education the best of the Baptist tradition can offer. Too many authentic Baptist Christians differ with you on this matter.
Mark Noll talks about discernment in his June 6 Review of New Republic. That is where you and the Shorter Trustees are inadequate and are trying to smoke and mirror an apology for your direction of Shorter that will not fly.
Art Demoss and his PR firm have an ideology and it is not the best American Christendom can offer.
So instead of trying to convince the Christian Century, try to back up and convince Nelson Price to step down; back off this arcane ill advised policy.
Bible talks about a lot of stuff, and pride and arrogance and self righteousness are up there.
I am convinced your Brand of Baptistness is not in the stream of Carlyle Marney, George Truett nor Judge Frank Johnson of Alabama.
No it is something else and that is where this ongoing very public discussion should focus.
As Carey Newman and David Gushee were to say about their expierience early days of Mohler at Southern Seminary; God is not in this.
Let's continue the conversation

Lewis Grizzard and Nelson Price

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Nov 22, 2011 4:32 pm

A fellow in the Elliot Letter comment thread recommended D. Neal's letter here and I see why.
Neal agrees with the conclusion of esteemed Notre Dame Scholar Mark Noll in his June 6 print issue review in the New Republic of two recent books on ideology and politics of folks of the likes of Nelson Price and Al Mohler.
He finds their "discernment" lacking.
Noll is not some rabid Communist, socialist anti God Liberal. Rather he is a scholar in the tradition of Billy Graham's Wheaton College where he taught longtime before going to Notre Dame.
I think one parable that may obtain here is in the story of Shorter Trustee Joy Battles and her sister's romance with the late Lewis Grizzard.
Grizzard wrote a column about their mother as she was dying of cancer; and her love for the Auburn War Eagle Tigers.
Grizzard graced the Thanksgiving Table in the early 80's of one of the most ardent Fundamentalist Baptist Floyd County has ever known, the late Floyd Battles.
If a diehard fundamentalist like Battles can welcome Lewis Grizzard to his Thanksgiving Table, then certainly Nelson Price should find it within himself to repent of his hubris and arrogance and even past the cliff he has taken Shorter over, climb back up and make Shorter a place of Grace and Hospitality to the wider wisdom of Academia; a place that would welcome the likes of Rachel Held Evans, Barbara Brown Taylor and Fleming Rutledge, Mark Noll and my friend Randall Balmer; Bonhoeffer Scholar Charles Marsh; even maybe in conjunction with Berry Pulitzer winner and John Calvin Scholar Marilynne Robinson.
This great Narrowing that Shorter has embarked on is a travesty and Nelson Price should bear the brunt.
The Great Lewis Grizzard himself and his memory of a Floyd County Thanksgiving 30 years ago I am convinced agrees with me.

And my response to Rebecca Johnson in the RNT

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Nov 22, 2011 6:56 pm

Doesn't look Ms Johnson has been reading very widely recently, especially if she wants to run an institution of higher education.
Tom Corts, the late great Christian statesman and President of Samford disagrees with her.
Google it up, Mother Jones piece of 2004 on Baylor and now Mercer President Underwood finds her assertions laughable.
Susan Shaw who wrote about her Mother's Sunday School class at West Rome finds Ms. Johnson out to lunch.
And if you ask the right questions I would imagine Doug Carver, the Rome native who was Chief Army Chaplain would find Ms. Johnson's assertions for how Baptist Christians should function in the public square in a pluralist society; would find her convictions suspect and antiquated.
I am convinced George Truett himself would be open to more discussion than Dowles and Nelson Price.
I have written several places in these comments about the discernment Dochuk and Williams, Mark Noll and Randall Balmer call for.
Shorter should expect more than the Sunday School lesson for 14 year old girls at Fellowship Baptist or Hollywood, though God bless whomever teaches there.
William Friday, former chancellor of the UNC system, a professing Christian had strong words for the fundamentalist Christians of the Jesse Helms stripe who took over Southeastern Seminary in 87.
And it is the Birch Society inflected, the latter day reincarnation in the darker shadows of the Tea Party and the Eagle Forum that are the ideological forces that have now implanted themselves through the hubris of Nelson Price and his lackeys at Shorter; and it is not a pretty site.
Read a book Ms. Johnson. Read Rachel Held Evans Evolving in MonkeyTown, or go deep in the last 150 pages of Diarmaid MacCulloch's Christianity.

In all Christian candor, I'm afraid you have no idea what you are talking about, nor the ugly history of SBC fundamentalism of the last 30 years that brought Shorter past this precipice.

Forrest Lanier Son Letter in RNT

Postby Stephen Fox » Wed Nov 23, 2011 1:04 pm

Today, easily googled for Rome News Tribune then click on opinion then letters.

Here is my reply:

John: I had a grand conversation with your father about the influence of the John Birch Society in Rome in the 60's and going forward. He said he once told the congregation of FBC Rome, When a Member of the JBS walked down the aisle of a Baptist church to preach Birchism, Jesus Christ Walks out.
I suspect Nelson Price has never completely dismissed the John Birch Society. The BX 6400 shelf in the Berry Library is stock full of testaments to the woeful ideology now morphed into the darker aspects of the Tea Party, even the doctrinairre Calvinism rampant in the water where President Dowles came from in Jim Demint Land of Redeemer Prez PCA in Upstate S.C.
Lot to explore there to see where Price and Dowles head is in regard Demint brand of the PCA; even Joe Morecraft brand of Christian Reconstructionism.
Darren Dochuk and Dan Williams raise the flag in their recent books on religious rights intersection of Southern Baptist Convention takeover.
And Bill Friday, the Chancellor of the UNC system was aware how it energized the takeover of SEBTS in Raleigh, in which former West Rome Pastor Jerry Vines was a key factor.
From the Allied Defense Fund of Charles Pickering to the ugliness of the Eagle Forum Wayne Flynt explores in Alabama, Rome has been infected and poisoned once again by the virus your Father trie
Thanks for your testimony

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thankful that Shorter has returned to its Baptist roots
by CAROL O. GARRETT, Rome Rn T.Com 2 days 22 hrs ago | 1464 views | 25 | 8 | | I AM THANKFUL that Shorter University has educated and trained many productive citizens over the years. Unfortunately, over those same years it evolved into an institution that had slowly strayed away from its original Georgia Baptist mission and purpose.

After a legal battle that ended in 2005, the courts found in favor of the Georgia Baptist Convention by ruling that GBC held full controlling interest of Shorter University. After that ruling, changes took place within the leadership to move the College closer to the Georgia Baptist founder’s original purpose of existence.

Knowing this recent history, one would think that anyone seeking employment at Shorter University would be in agreement with the published beliefs and policies set forth by the governing board. I believe it would be hypocritical for staff and faculty not to accept and reflect the moral and spiritual values Shorter University now endeavors to uphold.

I have been a Southern Baptist all my life, and I can assure you that there are things that have happened within the denomination that I have opposed. I have chosen not to leave, because I still believe the core Southern Baptist doctrine. As long as I stay, I believe it is only right for me to accept what Southern Baptist believes even if I may not fully agree with or understand every aspect. I would never expect the denomination to change based on my understanding.

No matter what ones personal beliefs are, the fact is Shorter University is a Southern Baptist affiliated school. Faculty and students alike must decide for themselves whether they want to be a part of it or not. The university trustees’ responsibility is to be true to their mission and purpose.

Unfortunately, a parting of the ways is sometimes necessary as demonstrated by Rome First Baptist and North Broad Baptist leaving the Southern Baptist Convention and joining the more liberal Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Sometimes if parties cannot agree on basic beliefs, a separation results in a win-win situation for all concerned.

Again, I know there are many wonderful people who have been students and faculty at Shorter over the years. Some have been and are now an important part of my life. I appreciate and cherish each and every one of them. I also believe some of them could not in good faith agree with the latest actions at Shorter, but I also believe they would have to agree when all is said and done that Shorter University is a Georgia Baptist College.

Every indication is the Fundamentalist trustees at Shorterare ignorant, where not ignorant lack the insight into the meaning of Scripture or their Holy Spirit is malfunctioning.

Some of them are intelligient, mostlikely made higher than myself, as an example on the SAT or ACT or other tests of verbal reasoning.

But a consensus of their betters makes a strong case they are lacking and woefully ignorant of my oft mentioned BX 6400's library shelf.

As such their leadership is poor.

What evidence do we have Nelson Price or Dowles is aware of Mark Noll, or has a passing grade on the BX 6400's. How does their insight into Scripture stack up compared to Fleming Rutledge, Barbara Brown Taylor, N.T. Wright,

Stewart Newman, Bill Leonard and James Dunn.

How do they justify the Allied Defense Fund in contradistinction to the Baptist Joint Committee and by what measure?

How is it Tom Corts and Mercer's Underwood and DAvid Gushee are out to lunch, and Larry McDonald surpasses Abraham Lincoln, Hugo Black and Judge Frank Johnson as the diapason?

Where are they on the Birch Society Spectrum?

What is their answer to Harold Bloom of the American Religion.

Are they a true Religion or a Bogus Cult, and do they have more explanation than a series of votes by a most mediocre majority of Baptists in the 80's to justify themselves.

Romans is true: God has consigned us all to Unrighteousness so that he might have mercy on us.

But just what is the culture bound, the provincial religions of the fundies on the Shorter Board and can they really be trusted, are they qualified to lead an Institution of Higher Education shaped by Christian Values, in light of not only Holy Sripture which they show scant evidence of understanding; but again by Noll and Diarmaid McCulloch and they just for starters

Nelson Price and Dowles are fundamentalists. They supported the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is unconscionable disgrace to semantics and the meaning of words to try to pretty them up.

A few weeks ago there was a letter in the RNT about Al Mohler in re the Column on him by frequent columnist in the RNT. Mention was made of Gus Niebuhr and his book Beyond Tolerance; another book in the neighborhood of the BX 6400 most likely none of the fundamentalists on the Shorter Trustee board are familiar with.

In the early 90's Gus Niebuhr was on panel in D.C. sponosred by the Baptist Joint Committee which carries on the tradition of George Truett and true Baptists on church state separation. Albert Lee Smith, a bircher in the stream that has informed Nelson Price and much of the water of fundamentalist SBCers in NW Georgia was complaining about the use of the word fundamentalist to describe the folks that were displacing most that was grand in the Southern Baptist tradition up to that time; the kind of Baptists John Lanier's father and Martin King, Jimmy Carter, even Louie D. Newton and Robert Marsh incarnated.

Gus Niebuhr who had a clue what words means said with no respect to Smith, Fundamentalists are what you are Albert Lee and folks who understand the meaning of words hold true to that nomenclature.

Take it up with Mark Noll of America's God, Randall Balmer and any less than provincial student of these matters.

I'm sorry but protestations by Babdiss in NW Ga who whouldn't know a real one from a Hole in the Ground are out to lunch on the meaning of the word and the history of the last 30 years of Babdiss mostly in the South.
