Mohler loses war with Modernity says NPR

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Aug 09, 2011 5:24 pm

"Evangelicalism has a tendency to devour its young," says Daniel Harlow, a religion professor at Calvin College, a Christian Reformed school that subscribes to the fall of Adam and Eve as a central part of its faith.

Pressler lost his fight and died on the Hill.

The People of the Covenant text at Baylor that ired Pressler so was right after all; now even Calvin College, irony of ironies, proclaims.

Mohler should have Evolving in Monkey Town's Rachel Held Evans on campus at SBTS this fall.

And if you are a Southern Baptist pastor and have public school biology teachers in your congregation, as a matter of integrity at minimum offer them some avenue other than Cooperative Program to channel their missions dollars.

I have read Mohler's stuff on this topic, including the most recent blog that is mentioned in the ABP article. I think he is dead on. But then, you all knew I would say that.

I think he's "dead" on it as well. Not much life in what he writes on the topic... :D

The question is, "whose science is correct?"
http://www.reasons.org/human-origins/adam-and-eve

While one group says, "Do the math," and you can't come up with fewer than 10,000 human beings existing at any point in history or pre-history, another says "Do the math," and you can not only have all chromosomes from one original male and female, but they couldn't have existed more than 20,000 years ago.

2 things on Mohler:

1) "Conservatives are my contemporary ancestors"----H.L. Menkin
2) "The higher the monkey climbs the tree, the more you see his tail"---my SC Democrat farmer grandfather who knew cow manure from real soil conservation on red clay hillsides.

Mohler repeated his earlier argument that much is at stake in denying there was a historical Fall. “That is a direct refutation of the major storyline of the Bible,” he said. “It's a direct refutation of what the apostles tell us Christ came to do for us in saving us from our sins. It is a rejection of the human moral agency that is absolutely vital to understanding why we are guilty before our creator.”

Despite all that, Mohler said evangelical Christians have nothing to fear from “legitimate science.”

“It's scientism and it's the naturalism that is the problem,” Mohler said. “I'm perfectly willing for science to tell me what the scientists are working on and how they believe the world is working. I cannot draw my conclusions about the Bible, about the gospel, from them.”

At the end of the day, Mohler said he believes there will be no final conflict between “Christian truth revealed in the Scriptures and true science.”

Mohler is saying some general stuff with which I agree. The problem is the exact details behind what he says. Where I would say there is more agreement than disagreement between the story of creation in the Bible and the one posited by the scientific approach, I bet he would say the Bible is right and science is wrong. Therein I have a major problem with the "Great Ape."

In my view, Mohler is a bombastic member of the SBC monkey tribe who is just slick enough to pretend intelligence and more than stupid when it comes to seeing any view but his own. Every morning he arises to worship himself in the ego mirror he constantly holds.

Why?

I know a lot of Southern Baptist biology teachers in public school who don't believe the crap they are required by the state to teach. Your assumption that anyone who teaches biology in the public school buys into the slanted, biased objectives they are required to teach is way off the mark. They really don't need to be told how to direct their missions giving.

Advocating the use of missions dollars as a tool to get some kind of denominational political action accomplished is never a good idea. Ask the BGCT how that worked out for them.

Sandy--

I don't think anyone who understands the Genesis text and the theories of Evolution has to make an "either / or" choice. They are both dealing with the simple issue of "where do we come from." Science looks to facts and the Bible has told the story through the eyes of faith!

As a minister and long-time student of science, I don't think they are teaching crap in public schools, nor do I think it's slanted and biased. I think evolutionary theory is correct, and in no way conflicts with my Christian faith and beliefs.

But to each his own, I guess.

I would pat Sandy on the back if he refused ever to fly or travel over the horizon because he would certainly fall of the 3-story world described in the Bible.

He won't do it nor will any other CR great---so I have to conclude they don't practice what they preach in ignorance!
