SBC church names confessed sex offender as Trustee

Warren Community Church announced in their that Paul Williams has been selected as a Trustee.

Williams was the associate pastor at the center of the clergy child molestation controversy at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN back in 2006-2007.

Bellevue's investigation found: ""Paul Williams engaged in egregious, perverse, sexual activity with his adolescent son over a period of 12 to 18 months."

Williams was finally fired on January 22, 2007.

The controversy was chronicled in many newspapers across the nation and detailed in all the major Baptist outlets including Baptist Press.

Just four years later, Williams is serving again in a church leadership role, now as Trustee at a church only 25 miles away from Bellevue.

The newsletter announcement even emphasizes Williams long "ministry" with children including his work with kids in Albania!!

**As an extra tidbit, the church Williams now serves is called "Warren Community Church" for a reason. The church describes itself as a "Purpose Driven Church"!!

We will have to watch and see how this situation is resolved. It is surreal.

No background check nor credentialing system could have prevented this.

Williams was at the center of a controversy at one of the largest churches in America. They at WCC surely knew who they were selecting to serve as trustee. WCC is literally only a short drive from Bellevue.

The SBC, the state convention and association could move to oust the church

A reporter should ring up Rick Warren for his two cents as this church is named after him apparently.

It is a sad commentary, but at least a trustee is not likely to be working with children by virtue of office.

I appreciate you posting this. I hope you are not treated as I was for bringing up Currie's DWI arrest. I think it is important for information like this to get as wide a read as possible. The role of a trustee is hopefully is more than just a way to raise money but also keep watch of the morality of our institutions and churches.
