Joshua, this Okie commends any pastor or pastoral candidate to pursue an ongoing regimen of training in the various academic disciplines of the Christian ministry and skills related to the ministry to which Christ has called him. However, to say that one must meet a necessarily subjective "functionally mastered" standard before he can be considered for a church pastorate, is ambiguous, at best, and legalistic at its worst in this Okie's opinion.
Notwithstanding your assertion that "fundamentalists" (Our respective definitions of the term, "fundamentalist", are likely very dissimilar.) are fundamentally ignorant when it comes to Biblical matters and/or secular scientific curricula, this Okie's experience is that there are examples of both competent and less competent, knowledgeable and less knowledgeable folks representing both the "fundamentalist" and "liberal" (Similarly, our individual definitions of the term "liberal" may be at variance.) views of Scripture and Christian doctrine. Essentially, the issue (from this Christian's fallible perspective) boils down to where one vests his ultimate authority.
In His Grace and Peace,
