While I am no fan of the SBC (at least not its leadership for the last 25 years or so), the challenge facing the SBC in dealing with this is no different that it is for any other group that has congregational polity with no governing hierarchy--CBF, Alliance, Primitive Baptists, Independent Baptists, Churches of Christ, et. al. If the SBC wants to move more in the direction of a hierarchy with authority over local churches, dealing with issues like this are part of the price tag. If state conventions are going to have church-minister relations offices and link up ministers and search committees, addressing this issue becomes a part of due diligence. Same goes for CBF, Alliance, seminary placement offices, or any other body that has anything to do with ministerial placement.
