This Okie intrudes into this thread with not a little temerity. . .The thread began with William's referral to Ben Cole's comment on Wade Burleson's blog concerning Arminians and heresy. Sadly, all of us are tempted to attack another's "authority" in the process of labelling and judging the one who is in agreement with said "authority". Conversely, we are too often bent to embrace our own human "authority" basing our confidence in him due to his vast and diversified educational credentials.
Nevertheless, this Okie is pleased to remind one and all that he graduated from the third grade of a two-room school which was affiliated with a "dependent public school district" in Oklahoma County. (The Okie modestly adds that he was an "Honor Student" in the 2nd Grade.) However, the Okie wants to assure everyone that he will not use his educational background as a weapon against those with less academic experience, or to influence them to feel less than adequately prepared to discuss issues of Christian doctrine with him.
That said, all of us, as finite created beings, are vulnerable to incorrect doctrinal perceptions. This Okie tends to agree with the comment that Tim made earlier, "Truth comes from God through His Holy Scriptures and not a degree track." Thus, Scripture, rather than man's commentary on it, should be our ultimate authority in determining the credibility of any proffered doctrine related to the Christian faith. Perhaps, our discussion would be more profitable if we looked at the individual "points" of specific Arminian and/or Calvinistic doctrines in separate threads, rather than concentrating on lambasting the proponents of each perspective in this devolving discussion.
