A few SBC 'bests' and 'worsts' and awards

Best Dressed: Wade Burleson, of course. He is sleek, handsome, nattily attired, impeccably groomed. GQ for you Wade. Congratulations.

Worst Dressed: Don't know the man's name but one of the lead singers for a big choir number had a sport coat, the color of which I have never seen - cross between hunter's dayglow orange and mustard yellow. Huh? It was painful to see...but everyone did see it. [Deceased old-school evangelist Eddie Martin wore such colors but only to get a hearing for the Gospel.]

Best prop: Bobby Welch's live frog.

Worst prop: Sorry to say it, but the Billy Graham statue just doesn't look much like him. It was a wonderful gesture but it looks like something out of a George Romero movie, the patina with spots on it and all...

Best session: Wednesday evening. Welch is the real thing. His sermon was outstanding, the closing mass choir number was scintillating.

Worst session: no winner.

Best Falwell look and sound alike: Tell me the truth, now, close your eyes and listen to Morris Chapman. He sounds just like Falwell. Now take a look from a distance - Mo gains another 40 lbs and he'll have it.

Harpo Marx Award: Ronnie Floyd, who was heard to say, "...................... ".

This Buds for You Award: Ascol and Cole.

Hotseat Award: John Floyd, chairman elect of the IMB. Floyd has his work cut out for him. No one in the SBC will have the scrutiny that he does.

Well Whaddaya Know Award: Wiley Drake, new 2nd VP. He probably wouldn't be elected to anything in his association but was elected convention VP. Enjoy the perks.

Get Me Outta Here Award: Mike Hamlet who had to explain why hardwiring the WMU was a good idea.

Poker Bluff Award: Hamlet who confidently declared such a new arrangement ment would be a "win/win" situation.

Didn't Think I'd See This Here Award: Fire swallower in the exhibit hall. We've always had fire breathers but this is the first fire swallower I've seen at an SBC.

A google search turns up only one occurrence of the phrase that is not in reference to the SBC motion:

It looks to me like they're trying to stop attempts to combine genetic materials from other species with human embryos, regardless of whether the technology in question is cloning. E.g. if you were to splice a pig gene for baldness into a human gamete because you don't want your kids to have to waste money on barbers.

This is particularly problematic for those like David who don't believe pigs have souls, since it is not clear what effect this will have when it comes time for the Resurrection of the Body.

Thanks, William. My plans to attend the meeting were shot down, as was my desire to view the "steaming" reproduction on the 'puter.

All was not lost, however. My excuse for missing the meeting was a three-day visit by a nephew, his wife, and 6-year-old granddaughter. They came from Colorado (the g'daughter from Texas). The nephew is a retired USAF pilot (he flew the C5-A Galaxy), and also a retired American Airlines pilot. He now teaches religion in a Catholic school, and is on his way to a 5-week mission in an African RC settlement. Our discussions for the three days of his visit were wide-ranging, explicit, friendly--and deep into our differences religiously, philosophically, educationally, and a big, big ETC.

As compared to my being at Greensboro, I think I came away a winner . . .

I was amazed at the depth (and HIS depth) to which the RC machine has formulated defenses for the all-too-noticeable weaknesses in their hierarchy, scriptural interpretations, and pragmatic applications of Biblical authority.

A new twist(at least for me)--that analyses of Greek Scripture which militate against support for RC interpretations are countered by affirming more exacting Aramaic sources which trump the Greek ratiocination long used by us'ns . . .
