Bush 41 in Atlanta

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Jun 12, 2018 2:03 pm

I was on Dallas Morning News facebook wall this morning with the definitive statement about Pence in Dallas with reference to Bush 41 in Atlanta 91 with Oliver North in Pressler's heyday just a year after his nomination for US Office of Govt Ethics.

Christian Ethics Today this month has a stellar open letter to Trump with concerns about the state of the nation signed by Will Willimon and Tony Campolo among others. It stands in witness to WA Criswell, the godfather of fundamentalism in the SBC and his heir apparent, Trump suckup Jeffress

I hope to have my Dallas comment for you soon

Bad idea, especially for an SBC that is reeling from scandal, and losing members at mainline denominational rates. Probably a better choice, though a self-proclaimed "Evangelical" who is actually Catholic is appearing live at a 2018 SBC meeting during a mid-term election year. And he's the one who initiated the invitation.

At least 40% of messengers voted to uninvite him.

More Trump inflected drama

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:38 pm

In addition to Thornton's 40 percent uninvited a move to weaken Trump dissenter Russ Moore was averted as a trustee who supports Moore was almost unseated.

I have not attended an SBC meeting since 1991 when Bush 41 spoke. It just got too hard to tell the difference between an SBC meeting and a Republican political rally.

Seems like there is not a great taste left in the mouth by the VP's appearance, which turned out to be exactly what was feared, a political stump speech light on the prayer, as the Star Telegram points out. And that's a newspaper that is considered pretty favorable toward things SBC.

Perhaps even Pence senses that speaking about prayer and church and other things Christian, as a representative of the Trump administration, appears hugely hypocritical.

I think Pence engaged in religious prostitution--selling your faith for a mess of political pottage. I'm sorry he chose to make Trump the Savior, not Jesus.

I don't understand why the SBC has politicians, of any party, speaking at their convention. It has never made sense to me. I can see why Pence wants to be there.

Seems like there is a lot of commentary, and a much higher level of opposition to Pence speaking than might be anticipated. Also, remember the resolution against social justice? Not considered.

are very interesting, the 34 comments.

Pressler, Jesse Helms and the Bircher Albert Lee Smith and Ed Mcateer 40 years ago woulda thought they were reading a delegation from the CBF
