Ive visited Pulliam Bailey's facebook wall urging her to come to Bama for a sequel and investigate the snake pit here with Rick Burgess and Cliff Simms of Yellowhammer News

Vicki Covington is a Bama novelist now in Lubbock Texas who Russ Moore went after in late 90s during the Inquisition of Samford Prez Tom Corts. Steve Gaines at the time was at the heart of it with Bircher Albert Lee Smith.

Have Dave Miller take a look at this as he was quoted in the Atlantic piece

The latest on Moore

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Mar 28, 2017 4:52 pm

I still don't think Moore is worthy of the attention he is getting. Woulda never had his platform without Pressler and Helms and Albert Lee Smith. Still the latest big deal in analyzing Evangelicals and politics ends with Moore as a bellwether

Land was the conservative resurgence choice for ERLC director. If there hadn't been a conservative resurgence, there wouldn't have been an ERLC, since the SBC would have continued to participate in the BJC, and would have continued to liaison through its Christian Life Commission. Moore is a product of the next generation of SBC leadership, beyond the original resurgence leaders. There's no question that he's in the mainstream of conservative Southern Baptists, in principle, but one of the clear differences is that he's been able to keep the ERLC consistent with its expressed values, rather than shifting positions to accommodate the perception of "popular opinion" within the SBC like Land did. Moore has been criticized for being consistent when it comes to the application of religious liberty, though some of the SBC's more bellicose mouthpieces hold views that are not consistent, depending on who else is involved. But a lot of those mouthpieces don't understand the ERLC's role, nor do they understand the way their trustee system works. I think they'll still be consistent with the way they've always done business, even when the moderates were in charge, in that a few oligarchs will force their way through to get some kind of backdown. At the moment, it doesn't appear that the ERLC''s trustees are moveable when it comes to support for Moore, but it is still a couple months before the convention, it is the SBC, and there are still plenty of strings for the pulling. In that regard, there may be some "Baptist chickens come home to roost."

Sandy's summary of this is very good, better than most any I've read elsewhere.

I commented on that same article in the other thread where you posted it. I think a lot of conservative Evangelical/right wing political leaders thought that those whom they name-call and label "the left," or "liberals" would have memories as short as those they depend on from most of their followers. The "mainstream media" that they despise so much has not only failed to miss the inconsistency, and the outright abandonment of what Evangelicals trumpeted as essential values just a short decade ago, but they're pointing it out, and supporting their perspective with example after example. Chuck Todd had a segment on Meet The Press about it today, even bringing in T.D. Jakes to provide some perspective. Good discussion, and Todd didn't cut anything short. You'd never catch Fox News or any other right wing fake news pusher to bring in a leftie for balance or objectivity.

Moore represents a group of Evangelicals who still seem to value truth, as do those on the board of trustees of the ERLC who are supporting him. Though Worthen doesn't mention this flap, specifically, and uses an example provided by Nazarene educational institutions, the SBC issue does also illustrate her point. Some SBC leaders are so enraged over Moore's stand on principle, which put him in a position where he couldn't support Trump, that they are willing to abandon even more principle, and hold missionaries on the field hostage in exchange for forcing a decision outside of the rules of denominational cooperation. Truth has become relative for most Evangelicals, including many Southern Baptists.
