2012 Annual Meeting in New Orleans

Postby William Thornton » Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:57 pm

I'm not there (would like to be) but am happy to provide instant commentary. You may read my predictions here.

There is this year the Calvinist controversy in full bloom. Moderates predicted this a couple of decades ago while on their way out the SBC door. The 2nd VP position is perceived as a contest between the Calvinists and Traditionalists.

The most significant news is that the SBC will elect a black president tomorrow but the buzz is for the calvinist/traditionalist stuff.

Dead from the Neck Up

To paraphrase WA Criswell. His SBC now, that's what it is.

I was there, NO SBC in 1990. Had Several Confrontations with Judge Pressler with God on My Side

Is anyone going to live blog it? I haven't heard anyone mention it being live blogged of the SBC blogs I follow.

The name non-change will be voted upon. If it fails it will be news. If it passes it will not be news and will be forgotten. There is no buzz about the non-change of the name.

I knew there was a live stream, but that won't help while I'm at work. I'd like to read/skim a rundown of the notable events.

Luter and Science

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Jun 19, 2012 4:33 pm

NPR has had two national stories today about the likely presidency of Luter.

I think the real story is how will Luter and Russ Moore, Nelson Price and Bryant Wright engage science.

Inerrancy is a ruse.

Here in Bama the state legislature that cannot happen without the State's Baptists has fired top leaders of APTV for not kissing the lunacy of David Barton.

Luter is an anomaly. Just channel the ghosts of Helms and Albert Lee Smith, Pressler and Curtis Caine and the Texas Regulars.

Here is the story

NY Times comment

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:00 pm

Luter's election is a distracting anomaly. Consult Chandler Davidson of Rice about the race history of SBC Takeover artist Paul Pressler. Find Ellen Rosenberg or progressive N.C Baptist to tell you about Jesse Helms role in the fundamentalist takeover of the SBC. Talk to Randall Balmer at Dartmouth.
Last week the Majority denomination in Bama, SBC, in collusion with the Tea Party had the heads of Bama Public Television over David Barton's bogus religious history. And there is no Bama immigration bill without the state's Southern Baptists.
Investigate what Fundy leader Nelson Price is doing to Shorter College in Rome Georgia.
Have Giberson and Stephens of The Anointed have a conversation with Richard Land and Bryant Wright, SBC outgoing Prez. Chat on faith and Science and the fundamentalist parallel universe.
Long trek to go before SBC is out of the darkness. This latest distraction is a feint.

Big story there. I hope William Thornton and Sandy read it.

Molly Worthen in NY Times on Luter

The paragraph: "The reason for their alienation, rooted in history....." is pretty strong. 68 comments and counting including Franky Schaeffer. Hope many of you will wade through the comments there.

..When it comes to Baptist disputes, I always remember this Emo Philips joke:
' Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!"
He said, "Nobody loves me."
I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes."
I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?"
He said, "A Christian."
I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?"
He said, "Protestant."
I said, "Me, too! What franchise?"
He said, "Baptist."
... (snip a few iterations) ...
I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912."
I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.'
