IMB, again

Postby Joseph Patrick » Mon Feb 12, 2018 5:08 pm

From Gerry Milligan

I see where David Platt is wanting to leave the IMB. I was thankful that we had already retired when he came to the IMB. I know that he inherited a terrible financial situation, but was his solution the best? Where is the IMB financially now? Dr. Cal Guy at SWBTS was a great proponent of an experienced missionary leading the IMB. Before David Platt we had two former missionaries who were not able to bring financial stability to the IMB. I do not know who God has in mind to lead the IMB, but hope that the trustees find God's chosen man.

This appears to be the official announcement, here:
Platt asks trustees to begin search for successor

I have no personal knowledge of how the IMB of the SBC stands, but I notice in his letter Platt says it is in "a stable, healthy financial position."

From Gerry,
What else could he say? Any other response (or non response) would be quite revealing.

Gerry, I haven't heard anyone say that the IMB is in anything but a stable financial condition. Do you think otherwise?

William, Maybe the IMB which had over 5000 on the field now cannot support more than 4000 (reports). So, for a winnowed down mission force it probably is in stable financial condition. David Platt did the hard thing but Southern Baptists are not following,

"Not following" in what sense?

From Gerry, In giving. I am going from memory here, but I think that giving is not enough to sustain the missionary effort. As I have said previously, I am 10 years away from the field, but emphasizing short term mission trips was not encouraged as it had been under Keith Parks. I do not know the veracity to what we always said when we said that people who go on short term mission trips and faithfully report back to their churches witness increased giving for missions in their churches.

IMB says revenues are sufficient for 4k. I don't think there is a magic pill to jack up CP revenues. LM is at record levels, save for the one post-VRI year, reserves are up. If Platt was expected to motivate SBC churches to radical levels of giving, that was an unrealistic expectation.
