The ABC-USA seminaries I have familiarity with are American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley where I took my Baptist History/Polity class last semester, Wake Forrest Divinity in North Carolina, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity, and Northern Seminary has a more conservative reputation.

Unless something has changed since I left the ABC six years ago, Wake Forrest is not related to the ABC/USA. You can also add Palmer School of Theology in Pennsylvania as well as Central Baptist in Kansas City, KS and Andover Newton.

Ed: Yea Tim, I too was a bit surprised to see Wake on Shawn's list. It probably should also be mentioned that Palmer is the former Eastern Baptist Seminary.

And for those not aware of ABC-USA seminaries, Andover Newton is in Massachusetts, I am not sure that it is in Boston proper but it is in that Mertro complex.

It might be worth mentioning that one of the differences between ABC seminaries and SBC seminaries is that the ABC seminaries are not funded by the denomination and are not controlled by the ABC/USA. IMO this leads to the ABC seminaries being less denominationally political than the SBC seminaries and their Presidents have been in the past.

It also means that ABC seminarians don't get the same kind of financial aid that Southern Baptist students at one time got for attending and SBC seminary. Seminary has gotten very expensive in many denominations.

Andover Newton is in the process of amalgamating with Yale Divinity School, and will I hear be closing its Boston-area campus and folding itself into the New Haven area.

I had heard something to that effect too. My understanding is that it will become a department/program within the large Yale Divinity School.

Ed: I believe this will be a good move, Yale has been a haven for many Baptist for several years. Here is a story about of one of those with whom we have been acquainted through the CBF, Baptist fellowship of the Northeast aka (BFNE).http://divinity.yale.edu/news/dale-pete ... -still-yds. Note he also has solid ABC_USA credentials also.

It sounds like a good idea to me too and would enhance the reputations of both schools I think.

We are in a tough time right now for seminaries. Central Baptist moved to a new campus to get away from the very expensive older buildings and St. Paul in KC also did the same thing moving on to the grounds of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS.

You're right Wake Forrest is not American Baptist. It's aligned with the Cooperative Baptists and I'm so sorry.

My dad got his S.T.M. from Newton (before it coalesced with Andover) in the late 'forties, meanwhile doing his student pastorate as youth minister at FBC Malden. I wonder what will become of the campus, which has some nice auld buildings which I visited in 2006 en route to my assistant teaching gig with NASK at SIT in Brattleboro.

No apologies needed. It is easy to confuse all the different denominational relationships. :D Having been in the UMC just six year I am starting to forget ABC/USA terminology for things.
