American Baptist Evangelicals and American Baptists for Life

Postby johnhkillian » Wed Mar 18, 2015 9:30 pm

Just wondering---and I am not seeking debate
From what I can tell, the American Baptist Evangelicals organization, long led by John Eby, has disbanded. Am I correct? Also, a California Pastor led the American Baptists for Life, a pro-life group working to get the ABC-USA on record as supporting a pro-life position on abortion.
I can find no record of either group at this time. Is there any conservative group still active in the ABC-USA? Or is the challenge to the left of center Establishment now over?
Please-- I am not ABC, so I do not mean to be offensive. Please kindly correct any misconceptions I might have

John, ABE morphed into the Cornerstone Network Group (and then another name change) and then faded into oblivion due when they stopped being specifically American Baptist. Also the ABE basically won the battle at the national level. The ABC still has on its official books opposition to same sex marriage, homosexuality, etc. largely due to the work of the folks associated with the ABE. But ultimately the ABE has lost the war because local churches regularly defy the official position of the ABC on LGBT issues.

Ed; Helo Dr. John, I have only been in the ABC-USA since 1996. Have been active in two regions (Ohio) and Upstate (NYS) and have attended Regional missions conferences in Ohio, New York and Connecticut. And the National Missions conference celebrating 200 years of missions last year at out national conference center in Greenlake WI. Along with 5 ABC-USA biennials and I have never knowingly encountered any one from The " American Baptist Evangelicals organization" nor the pro life group of which you inquire. Yet I do not know the answer to your 1st question. As to the second, I am not sure what you mean by the Left of center establishment. I have sat in on seminars presented by ABC leaders from all over the country and quite honestly I have found most of them pretty close to the SBC leadership that I encountered in the 1950's,60's and 70's. in Ga. Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Kentucky. But while ABC-USA has many Pastors and lay persons to the left of center we also have many to the right. And I have found both well represented at our Biennials and they attend And participate the breakout sessions where issues are given what I believe to be a fair hearings before being voted on in the the business sessions. So the era of challenges of ideologies is still alive. What I really appreciate is that I can lean left on an issue like right to life, I prefer pro reason, to pro-life or Pro abortion, and on same sex marriage turn around and take a hard right stance. ABC-USA really understands Local church autonomy and priesthood of the believer.

Dr Ed, I requested correction so thank you for clarifying my status. I have friends who have served ABC-USA churches and those churches are traditional Baptist churches with a respect for Scripture and a zeal for missions and evangelism.
Since my knowledge of ABC-USA life is limited, I would defer to you on matters involving the politics of that denomination

Ed: John I spent too much time as a civil bureaucrat traveling the state of Indiana to pursue a doctorate, in fact I dropped out of SBTS in 1964 to wait for them to get their social work program up and running, they did but I didn't go back until I retired from the State job. Also Al and the SBTS Trustees already had the hatchet poised over that program so I took an MA in Christian Education in 92, at the end of Roy Honeycutt's tenure. I was invited into stick around and take a few more courses for an M.Div and then to do a D.Min. in Church planting. A Summer Praxis in 1991 at Indianapolis had convinced me that doing so in conjunction with the Indiana State Convention wasn't for me. If I had known then what I know now (I am sure you have heard that song) I would have switched to ABC when I went back to Indiana in 64. BTW, I was registered as a Republican in Alabama in the late 50's.

Two last words relevant to your questions. When trying to understand ABC-USA Keep in mind two major factors, time and location.
