Thank you for your email of welcome.
I am engaged in an intentional year of visiting different worshiping communities. So far this has taken me (not necessarily in precisely this order) to
Japanese Baptist Church's bimonthly bilingual Communion service,
the Seattle Karen Christian Fellowship at Kent First Covenant,
my home church (Fremont Baptist), about five times,
Full Gospel Deliverance Center Church,
Skyway United Methodist,
the Evergreen Region MLK Day service at Seattle First Baptist,
New Birth Ministries COGIC,
the evening Slavic (mostly Ukrainian) service at Church of Grace,
the Spanish evening mass at St. Anthony's Catholic,
the English morning mass at St. Paul's Catholic,
Luther's Table's Monday evening Communion service,
Skyway's Community Bible Fellowship,
Amazing Grace Lutheran Church,
the weekday noon mass (RC) at Plymouth Congregational,
Seattle Buddhist Church aka Betsuin aka Temple (twice, for Vernal Equinox and again for Buddha's Birthday),
the Skyway LDS Ward's Sacrament Meeting,
the Evergreen Easter Sunrise service at St. Ignatius Chapel (Seattle University), &
the Renton Church of Christ, Scientist.
3 Renton Bahá'í gatherings (Declaration of the Báb, Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh, and a devotional meeting on joy and sorrow
First Baptist Church of Berkeley, California,
Wednesday noon Holy Eucharist at St. Mark's Cathedral
Compline (evening chant service) at St. Mark's Cathedral
Rainier Avenue Church (Free Methodist)
First Covenant Church
Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Kirkland
Bethany Community Church's evening service
It's a good way to spend a few weeks, but no substitute for a church home. (I'm not disaffected with my own church, Fremont Baptist, though my wife doesn't particularly like it, but being busbound in Skyway makes Fremont quite a difficult commute, especially for her.)
Bethany CC (and Bethany Lutheran for that matter) suffers the same geographical disadvantage as Fremont, from my point of view. Also, it is not my cup of communion juice for a few other reasons, most of which have to do with your music. I think it's a cultural/generational thing, for the most part, but the dearth of opportunity for participatory musical worship (and the disinclination to sing) that I felt Sunday evening would be a major reason for my not returning with any frequency.
In any case, I do believe the Spirit of God was there amongst us (but then I felt that about the Buddhist Church, too, even though they are technically atheists and as reticent about congregational song as your folks). I was thrilled that your music leader included the "earth shall soon dissolve" verse in "Amazing Grace" (and, I think, left out the intrusive "10,000 years" verse). The sermon was interesting and well done. Communion appeared to be non-alcoholic, the first time I've been to a communion service where there was no mention of the wine/Welches issue but a distinction between glutinous and gluten-free matzoh!
Sincerely yours,
Leland Bryant Ross aka Ros' Haruo

Hi Jason, thanks for getting back to me.In email, Jason Murray from Mars Hill wrote:Hey Leland,
I was the one you gave your connect card to last Sunday. Thanks for dropping that off. I invited you to The City, so you should see that invite in your gmail account as well.
I noticed you didn’t fill out the reverse of the Connect Card. Are you interested in visiting one of our Community Groups? They meet all throughout the week. Let me know a good night that works for you and I can put you in touch with one of the leaders.
You mentioned on the Connect Card being a visitor, was last Sunday your first time to Mars Hill U-District? What brought you to visit? Glad you came, and welcome. Hope we can continue to get to know you!
Let me know if you have any questions about the church or anything like that.

Before the throne of God above
1 Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea;
a great High Priest, whose name is Love
who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on his hands,
my name is written on his heart;
I know that while in heaven he stands
no tongue can bid me thence depart.
2 When Satan tempts me to despair,
and tells me of the guilt within,
upward I look, and see him there
who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Saviour died,
my sinful soul is counted free;
for God the just is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me.
3 Behold him there! the risen Lamb!
my perfect, spotless righteousness,
the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace!
One with himself, I cannot die;
my soul is purchased by his blood;
my life is hid with Christ on high,
with Christ my Saviour and my God.

Not as many extravagant piercings as I had anticipated. I had a conversation before worship with a man, Doug, who turned out to be the clarinetist and a woman, Karen, who wanted to recruit me for a book study on Karen Armstrong's A History of God. We talked about AA, and about the Bible, and about Esperanto (since the Bible I was carrying was in that language). Nice people, hardly scum of the earth, no matter what the Apostle Paul said. (I notice NRSV uses "rubbish" and "dregs", not "scum". 1 Cor. 4:13)
The venue was Burien Community Church, an Evergreen-ABC congregation in a suburb south of Seattle, but
Nice job of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms", with the second time through the refrain done well in a cappella harmony!Return to Baptist Faith & Practice Forum
