New Hymnal Time

PostPosted: Fri Jun 15, 2018 1:55 pm

My church may be in a position to obtain a new hymnal in the near future.

Criteria include traditional hymns and a good mix of gospel hymns. New hymns of the 21st century.

Can any of you recommend any candidates?

I do not have any since I ran out of bookcase space in 2001 and new hymnals cost real money.

Any help will be appreciated.

What is your church's current hymnal, and how would you rate it in terms of meeting the church's needs and fitting with the church's tastes?

One of the recent song books I've been most impressed with is Songs of Faith by . A good mix of old church songs (traditional) and gospel songs. Nice print job, nicely bound. Since it was published at the end of the 20th century, though, it won't have any 21st century tunes. (Don't know how the price compares to other hymnals; possibly a little high.)

Thanks for the responses. Our current hymnal is the 1991 Baptist Hymnal from Broadman Press. It is a little dated. Some of its editing for political correctness is a little clumsy.

Celebrating Grace is a candidate but is heavier than the '91 hymnal which is almost too heavy for some of our senior members and it misses out on some of the newest hymns which address 21st c. issues.

Have you contacted First Congregational of Houston (I think it is) to see if it might be feasible to do a locally adapted edition of their . I remain convinced that each church should have its own hymnal. BTW, Hymnary.org only has the first 200 hymns listed. There are many more.

1975 Baptist Hymnal is as good as it gets.

The 1975 hymnals were all uniformly devoid of 21st-century hymns, though. I really think you ought to look at the option of a customized local hymnal. One that meets your foreseeable wants and needs.

I'm interested in knowing what sort of 21st-century hymns you're thinking of. Can you give four or five first lines, or name authors?

A good friend of mine, the late Max Lyall, was on the committee that produced the 1991 Baptist Hymnal. Max told me that one of the well known preachers on the committee didn't want any tunes in a minor key and only wanted happy upbeat tunes.

One of the very recent hymnals (2015) I've been looking through recently is . It has quite a few 21st-century hymns, largely but by no means exclusively Getty Hymns. Keith Getty is listed 40 times; Mark Rice maybe 30 times; Philip Webb 8 times; R. C. Sproul twice; here's their . You might look through a few recent hymnals and see which of the items in them are not familiar to you are nonetheless worth getting to know. I like a lot of the stuff in the 2012 RLDS ("Community of Christ")

Another very interesting recent acquisition is , 2012, from a publisher called Sumphonia. It's in Aikin shapenotes, but is atypically eclectic, including for example songs by Carl Daw and Brian Wren.

21st-century hymnals

PostPosted: Mon Jul 09, 2018 10:45 am

Yes, is an interesting hymnal. It's on the small side, so anyone will readily compile their own like the one that Chris did for Celebrating Grace. It has a few unusual older songs (Moravian, I think some is) that I would be happy to see in a larger, more eclectic collection, and also a few 21st century hymns (though not, as I recall, any of those that appear in or or , nor the hymns we sometimes sing in Sunday morning worship at Fremont. I'm guessing they are the work of friends and colleagues, perhaps students or congregants, of the editor's. (Robert may know more on this subject.)

As for , as we Hymnary.org editors lovingly refer to Hymns, Psalms, and Spiritual Songs, 2015, from Sumphonia, it appears to be a Churches of Christ compilation, and it appears to have been selected by a rather open, democratic method, to judge by . I'm hoping to be in touch with its editors at some point, and will relay any pertinent stuff.

A couple of other, very different from each other, 21st century hymnals that come to mind are Hendrickson's 2006 and the PCUSA's Christian Life is pretty traditional, with little material from the last fifty years and basically nothing one could call 21st-century hymns. Glory to God, on the other hand, has lots of recent material, mostly similar in type if not in detail to the recent material in Celebrating Grace and/or Community of Christ Sings.

21st Century Hymnody: What?

PostPosted: Mon Jul 09, 2018 11:18 am
by Haruo
Each of the hymnals mentioned in my previous post shares a certain amount of core repertoire with all the others, but each also has a lot of material not found in most, or even any, of the others. In particular, I think that except perhaps for a bit of overlap between Celebrating Grace and Community of Christ Sings (and Glory to God), there is no shared 21st-century hymnody. Even though the new hymnal project has been placed on the back burner for the time being, I'm still interested in what specific hymns the term "21-century hymns" suggests to James and to each of you. If it weren't for the surely prohibitive royalties involved, I'd think it both interesting and useful to compile a hymnal in which none of the hymns was dated earlier than 2000. It ought at least to be possible to compile an online database pointing to such material eclectically. I have no doubt other denominations have material to contribute, and probably lots of nondenominational sources to boot. The United Methodists intend to have a new hymnal ready for the church's imprimatur in .

I just filtered the hymnary.org database, and if I counted correctly, it has just over 150 publications (hymnals, other book/booklets of hymns, and a very few electronic/online items published in 2000-2017 (none listed yet for this year). Some of those not yet mentioned might be worth looking at as a source of hymn texts, tunes, or arrangements, but I doubt if any would be a good fit for James's church as a pew hymnal.

Here, fwiw, is the list from Hymnary.org's database for 2000-2009. The asterisks indicate an item I own. I will highlight items I think might be worth looking at for purposes of informing a pew-hymnal-creation project. This is not meant to disparage the value of other items; it may be that I simply don't know (or don't remember) that a particular item has particularly interesting stuff in it. Or it may mean that there's interesting stuff but I am guessing it would be too esoteric for most churches.

Two new acquisitions today: Trinity Hymnal (1990), which I have wanted pretty much ever since I started collecting hymnals, and the brand-new Trinity Psalter Hymnal (2018), both from Great Commission Publications. The former is a joint publication of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in America; the latter, of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the United Reformed Churches in North America. There is also a Baptist edition of the Trinity Hymnal; I would be willing to pay $30 for it, but the cheapest one I can find is almost $50, so I remain without it.

Top 500 Baptist Hymns

PostPosted: Wed Jul 11, 2018 2:05 pm
by Haruo
This is a list of the top 514 hymns, in terms of the number of hymnals that they appear in among a set of somewhere between (I think) a dozen and two dozen Baptist hymnals. I made the list in 2012 or so, and can no longer find the list of hymnals involved (it may have been on a now-dead hard drive), but I know it included all official SBC hymnals from Broadman to 2008, the one from the 1880s that Doane edited, Celebrating Grace, Christian Worship 1941, and Hymnbook for Christian Worship (1970), and some others. It probably didn't have much or any Primitive Baptist input.

In the following list, the number on the left is the hymn's approximate order among the 514 hymns in terms of frequency of inclusion. Then follows the first line in alphabetical order, and then the tune name (or names):
