Good piece on Christians and gender roles

Author Marie Griffith, who is the director of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, and a distinguished professor, puts out an excellent perspective on the history and causes of issues related to gender roles and Christian faith. She has a lot of good insights, writing from her academic perspective, but also from her personal life, which included being raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee in a Southern Baptist church, doing all of the things that we did as children and teenagers in Southern Baptist churches when we were growing up during the same time frame. Her conclusions are well researched and connected to personal experience, and I will read her book.

I'll give credit where credit is due. This was originally posted by Stephen Fox, who does, on occasion, come up with some excellent recommendations, thought provoking topics, and excellent sources. Unfortunately, he started the topic in the little-used and visisted thread on the New Baptist Covenant, and it got buried there.

My interest in reading the book stems from Dr. Griffith's faith background. There is a very distinctive cultural development that comes out of Southern Baptist church life for the baby boom generation. It was "franchise faith," a series of programs that were aimed at building loyalty to the denominational brand and focusing children and youth on a mission and purpose that would keep you involved, and make you a lifelong supporter of the Cooperative Program. Over the years, I've met many people who didn't wind up where the program mission and purpose intended. At any rate, she shares some perspectives here that prompted me to read her latest book.

Where it says "corrugation" it should say "congregation". Yes, interesting reading, if a bit overly verbatim.
