New Year 2018

Postby Haruo » Thu Dec 21, 2017 1:16 pm

My projected resolution: to read the Bible through in Esperanto.

I wrote:I'm going to (intentionally) lose my job in the next month or so, which should free up a bit of time for reading, but I still have a full year ahead, what with (hopefully) visiting Tokyo in April and building the new Biblioteko Culbert building during the first half of the year and preparing for and helping with the Congress (including publishing the Bicknell himnareto) in July. Things should get quieter after that, but I'll still have a full menu of ttd for my tunebook due out in Montreal in 2020. Not to mention putting the Biblioteko in order and cataloguing the many uncatalogued parts of it.

I've not thought about resolutions for 2018 yet. I'm still trying to get 2017 wrapped up with Christmas Eve this weekend. My Associate is preaching on the 31st so that is giving me a break as we head in to the New Year.

Having started my Advent>Christmas thread three weeks earlier than your normal folks, I thought I would aim for similar hypertimeliness in regards to the New Year.

I have often enough that I can't say "never", but at least I've never been successful at it. In addition to the 52-churches-in-52-weeks one I failed at in 2011, back in about 1978 I made a resolution to quit smoking on New Years Day 1981 or 1982 (I forget which). I made it three or four days. I tried again three or four times, and each time made it three or four days. Each time on the third or fourth day I would get so drunk I forgot I was not smoking and by the time I came to the next morning, I was back at it. So I tried to quit drinking in order to quit smoking, and that lasted... four days. This was the first time I realized that I had something eerily in common with alcoholics. In 1984, God got me sober, rather dramatically, two days before I was planning to kill myself by robbing a bank, and I haven't had a drink since. I tried quitting smoking a couple of times in the years that followed, setting a date etc., but I never lasted more than four days even though I wasn't drinking. Wasn't until April Fool's Day of 2000 that God much less dramatically, almost surreptitiously, relieved me of that one. (The winking emoji in my head says, "Maybe if you'd tried April Fool's resolutions instead of New Years, Leland..." ;) )

A cousin posted on Facebook that several years ago he made a New Years resolution to never make another New Years resolution. He says that is the only New Years resolution he has ever kept!

My only resolution is to be more fully present with the people around me each day.
