Getting rid of books

Haruo do you have a copy of "Wally Fowler and the 'Oak Ridge Quartet' deluxe edition" songbook? It has the song "Naturalized for Heaven." I might start a bidding war between you and Jon Estes.

Also:

Revival Choir, J. Stratton Shufelt, 1946. Has "My mother's Bible" a guaranteed tear jerker.

Devotional Hymns, Hope Publishing Co., 1947. Looks Presbyterian.

Just curious, is this the My Mother's Bible song:

1 There's a dear and precious book,
Tho' it's worn and faded now,
Which recalls the happy days of long ago;
When I stood at mother's knee,
With her hand upon my brow,
And I heard her voice in gentle tones and low.

Chorus:
Blessed book, precious book,
On thy dear old tear-stained leaves I love to look;
Thou art sweet day by day,
As I walk the narrow way
That leads at last to that bright home above.

2 There she read of Jesus' love,
As he blest the children dear,
How he suffered, bled and died upon the tree;
Of his heavy load of care,
Then she dried my flowing tear
With her kisses as she said it was for me.
[Chorus]

3 Well, those days are past and gone,
But their mem'ry lingers still,
And the dear old Book each day has been my guide;
And I seek to do his will,
As my mother taught me then,
And ever in my heart his words abide.
[Chorus]

I do not have any of these, and am slightly interested in all three. I will gladly reimburse for postage, but will not compete with Jon if he really wants a hymn about naturalization.

Neither I nor Hymnary.org has either of the first two. I do have a volume called Revival Solos, which may or may not be related somehow to Revival Choir. I have copies of the 1935 and 1957 editions of Hope's Devotional Hymns, but the database is not edited to the point where it's possible to tell if their contents are identical. If they are, I would be inclined to imagine editions intervening would also be mere reprints, in which case I'm not sure I'd even want to spring for postage ;-) but in the absence of proof... So if I'm getting the others, might as well throw this in as well...

Hymnary.org has 87 hymnals with that "My Mother's Bible" in them, of which I possess copies of eight, most famously the Broadman Hymnal and most recently the New National Baptist Hymnal (1994 ed.).

My Mother's Other Bible

Postby Haruo » Mon Oct 09, 2017 7:30 pm

There's another, slightly older, hymn called "My Mother's Bible", which occurs in 75 hymnals at Hymnary.org but of which I don't have a single one, wish I did (though the Hymnary data is thoroughly sufficient should I want to use it). The text is by George P. Morris, and it is set to a number of different tunes (unlike the one Robert Vaughan posted, which is usually to the same Charlie Tilman tune. I particularly like the final couplet:
In teaching me the way to live,
It taught me how to die.
Here is the entire text:
1. This book is all that’s left me now!
Tears will unbidden start—
With faltering lip and throbbing brow
I press it to my heart.
For many generations past,
Here is our family tree!
My mother’s hands this Bible clasped,
She, dying, gave it me.

2. Ah, well do I remember those
Whose names these records bear;
Who round the hearth-stone used to close
After the evening prayer,
And speak of what these pages said,
In tones my heart would thrill!
Though they are with the silent dead,
Here are they living still!

3. My father read this holy book
To brothers, sisters dear;
How calm was my poor mother’s look,
Who leaned God’s Word to hear!
Her angel face—I see it yet!
What thronging memories come—
Again that little group is met
Within the halls of home!

4. Thou truest friend man ever knew,
Thy constancy I’ve tried;
When all were false I found thee true,
My counselor and guide.
The mines of earth no treasures give,
That could this volume buy;
In teaching me the way to live,
It taught me how to die.

Mom's OLD but true Bible

Postby Haruo » Mon Oct 09, 2017 8:31 pm

There's another family of texts built around "My mother's old Bible is true", Hymnary.org shows three variants by different authors, but all with similar refrains beginning with the title line.

In the Denson edition of the Sacred Harp we have two related tunes, 165 FAMILY BIBLE and 342 THE OLD-FASHIONED BIBLE, which are associated with a text beginning "How painfully pleasing the fond recollection". In my polyglot tunebook, I plan to set a poem written by my paternal grandmother, a true Bibliolatrix, to 165 FAMILY BIBLE:
On Lincoln's Birthday in 1924, Elsie May Lister Ross wrote:Too few are the garlands we weave for the living,
Too many the wreaths that are laid on the bier;
If someone has flowers or praise to be giving,
'Tis wrong to withhold while the loved one is here.
When once the dear soul from the cold clay doth vanish,
What use the sweet blossoms so lavishly spread?
One kind, loving word that the teardrops will banish,
Is better than loudest applause to the dead.
...provided I can come up with a suitable counterpart text in Esperanto.

Rather than PM I'll make the address public, in case anybody else wants to downsize their hymnal collections at my negative expense.

Are you doing a general "weeding out," or just these few hymnals?

We have a need for books which would get reasonable use in a Christian school library. We have a pretty advanced curriculum in Biblical studies, including a mix of apologetics and systematic theology. Always on the lookout to supplement the library in that department.

Re: Acquiring books

Postby Haruo » Sat Oct 21, 2017 8:56 pm

Thank Frieda for the nice songbooks, William! They bring the list of "My Hymnals" at hymnary.org to 401 items. (Some are more or less duplicates, like the Devotional Hymns of 1947, which may turn out to be identical in contents to the 1935 and/or 1957 hymnals of the same name from the same publisher... or there may be minor but intriguing differences. I may not live to find out, but luckily all that sort of detail is available in heaven if I'm still interested. And some, like Al Smith's Low Voices volumes around #210, are really serials that should perhaps be counted as an item rather than items.) The eccentric alphabetization is because hymnary.org spits them out in perfectly alphabetical order according to its own rather chaotic catalog-number system rather than title.

Collecting Esperanto hymnals

Postby Haruo » Sat Oct 21, 2017 8:58 pm

The 25 items in boldface are the ones in Esperanto, if I caught them all.

You must have an extra bedroom, or a good sized basement.

I wish! Mrs H wishes so if anything more heartily. What we have is a good-sized garage, and a spare bedroom, and a tool shed, none of which we can get into because of the books (and the sewing machines and the camping equipment and the... and the...). Within the next few months we will be adding another outbuilding dedicated to the libraries (there are really two, Biblioteko Culbert, which has more than a thousand books and a lot of other materials in Esperanto, and the Ann E. Beatty Memorial Hymnal Collection, which I listed above). I see I missed (and am about to catch) one Esperanto item, the brand-new 300+-song KANTU: Kristanaj kaj nereligiaj kantoj en Esperanto, which mentions me in the preface(!) and which has the unusual feature of setting haiku to music, providing 15 tunes for singing the little buggers.

Luckily, I'm planning to retire in January and will be able to devote somewhat more time to winnowing and rearranging.

Last night I also got item #402, a new little shapenote tunebook called The Dayton Harmonist. I've already set Esperanto texts to two of its tunes, one of which I think I can display here. The book consists of songs composed, co-composed, or arranged by the late John Bayer, an Old Brethren type Baptist from, I think, Michigan. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 62 last year, and this is a memorial compilation dedicated to his family and his memory.

I have set my Esperanto version of "My Jesus, I love Thee", lightly revised, to Bayer's Symyadda, and a paraphrase of part of 1 Corinthians to his Tinkling Brass: Image

I am overcooked for the Holidays

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu Nov 09, 2017 5:41 pm

Enthralled by the Sidney Blumenthal Quartet on Lincoln. Spotreading chapters of Volumes I and II now. Chapters on Lincolnd as a Reader, the chapter on John C. Calhoun and the Mormon Nauvoo City Joe Smith, and the Know Nothings are rivetting. The last four pages of Volume One Biblical Literature.

I can see why my friend Vernon Burton, FU 69, Clemson history proff emeritus called Lincoln not only America's greatest President, but the Greatest American theologian of the 19th Century!

And Tom Corts best product of his 20 years at Samford, ERic Motley has new book, Madison Park. Comes with endorsing blurbs by Laura Bush, Louis Gates the Harvard Beer Party Negro who showed Oprah her DNA; and Yale of Princeton's Stephen Carter.

Released in Bham two days ago. Corts widow was present. Ive seen a copy, Have a personal copy on the way.

I'm not familiar with this one. Will have to look it up. One the same general topic, A Hanging in Nacogdoches: Murder, Race, Politics, and Polemics in Texas's Oldest Town is a very intriguing book.
