God in My Pocket

Postby Dave Roberts » Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:40 am

This week, I have been hearing a lot of "God in my pocket" statements, and I'm sure they will be just as prevalent at the Democratic convention two weeks out. These re the marks of civil religion in which "In God We Trust" becomes the key word as if somehow that is a religious statement or sets us apart from all other nations because it is printed on our money, thus allowing us to have God in our pockets.

Questions need to be asked:

Who is this God?

How do we know him?

What difference does God make in our lives?

How do you know God is male?

What does this God in your pocket expect in our morality?

Does this God (on our money) really love America more than other countries?

If God is the Creator of all the universe, does he really care who is elected in the fourth congressional district of some state where two active Christians are running against each other?

Is this God really divine or just God in my pocket?

Excellent questions! If only those using the term would share their answers with us.
