There are some allusions in the scripture as to the eternal nature of hell. But I don't think those allusions are necessarily literal descriptions as much as they are illustrations for the purpose of understanding a concept, including those offered by Jesus on this topic in parables. I believe that salvation is both a single event, when grace is received, and a journey, and that even as we move along, and choose to get off that path at some point, grace preserves the eternity of the believer's soul.

The journey part you and I agree with Sandy. United Methodists don't really believe in a single event of salvation because we believe we are still being saved all the time and that God's work of salvation begins in us before we are able to respond.
