I liked Wnfred Moore. In another time his avuncular demeanor and record of churchmanship would surely have gained the SBC presidency. As it was, he offered an older, less modern image in contrast to Stanley and Rogers, being over a decade older than either. In one of his two races for SBC president someone flew him around the south for airport tarmac-style pre-convention press events. He was notably uncomfotable in the one i saw.
Bob Allen's extensive obit does a good job. It's almost sad that Allen's first sentence reads, "Two-time failed Southern Baptist Convention presidential candidate Winfred Moore...". But, that's why he gets the 'national' obit, his prominence in the CR.
One might study the preaching styles of Moore, Adrian, and Stanley. Adrian had no peer. Stanley was the kind of teacher/lecturer/preacher that attracted lots of boomers and younger SBC clegy. Moore, seemed to me, was old-school, old style, used lots of homey illustrations, etc. I always wondered if Mods might have won an election if they had found a 40-50 year-old guy, like Jackson or Vestal, earlier in the process.
My stray thoughts on SBC stuff may be found at my blog,
