The position that continues to be advocated by "Progressives" a.k.a. liberals, is derived from modern textual criticism, influenced by the Enlightenment. It is neither a traditional position held by Christians for centuries, nor is it held by those Christians today in the various traditions of the Reformation who understand that a Holy Spirit inspired work conveys truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Even most of the relatively small group that wound up distancing itself from the SBC when the leadership shifted to be more representative of the churches and membership accept the 1963 BFM, and hold to it as a creed, and those words indicate a belief in an inerrant Bible. 80% of Protestants worldwide belong to a denomination that does. In Christian theology, the view that homosexual behavior isn't sinful goes with the view that the Bible isn't an authoritative source of truth, which is exactly what some of you are articulating. Few Christians buy that.
Now, the problem is the way homosexual behavior is handled, or should be handled, by the church, and the fact is that most conservatives who claim belief in an inerrant Bible don't use it when it comes to its principles with regard to ministry to people who are trapped and imprisoned in this particular sin. To be honest, I don't think anyone is doing a good job with this particular issue, because GLBT people aren't flocking to progressive-liberal churches either. What winds up happening is that churches which are "welcoming and affirming" become congregations made up of almost completely gay people, and the heterosexual members drift elsewhere.
