Just got back to town and read the newspaper about this occurrence.

My friend Rev Frank Broyles of the Interfaith Mission Service is under fire for this suggestion of a Wiccan to lead the prayer at the City Council meeting. He has suggested a large variety of religious leaders in the past several years including the very same Wiccan leader back in January; 75% have been Christians of all stripes; there have been Jewish, and Moslem leaders in the past and he reportedly is suggesting a Buddhist and Hindu in the near future. This time someone complained about the Wiccan.

My personal opinion is that a moment of silence beats any clergy led prayer at a City Council meeting. Prayer is private conversation with God (best done in private and with more time listening that vocalizing/sub-vocalizing words of petition, praise, thanksgiving). It can clarify thoughts and purify motivations. Just what one needs gong into typical deliberations before a Council.
