Good!

I never imagined, though, that Bertrand Russell ever mentioned Goodreads.com!

Rosenberg on Carter

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Apr 04, 2014 4:06 pm

Balmer's book to be tempered by Ellen Rosenberg's 88 take on President Carter that relied heavily on the examination of Marshall Frady in late 70s. Frady often there first with the best insights.

From her chapter Ideology and Carter as exemplar of the Baptist mind these bullet points:

quoting Garry Wills: For a bright and modern man he has a reined in curiousity. He suggests a kind of willed mastery; sticks to his certitudes.

Ellen says this mirrors Herschel Hobbs "Anchored but free" re "Christian academic Freedom". Behold the cultural world, if you can label it, label, pigeonhole it will be yours.

And then Frady talked about "some furtive tone of calculations to his folksy flourishes, the combination of the sentimental with the deliberation of a mechanical engineer"

A magisterial Review

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri May 16, 2014 12:51 pm

I overuse the word and it is something of a private joke on myself but this review is thorough to say the least, and yes, I think the last paragraph truly is magisterial.

Stay with it till the end:

Will supply the link soon, but give me credit for the nice buildup

Balmer is leading two workshops on his new book at the upcoming CBF General Assembly in Atlanta - thanks in part to the efforts of Fox!

A fine recommendation - looks to be an interesting read.

Yardley of Wash Post on Balmer and Carter

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue May 27, 2014 3:55 pm

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ ... story.html

Briefly he gets Balmer on Billy Graham right.

But in one key paragraph, though Yardley has some strong reservations about Balmer's take on religious right, he shows a poor understanding of what happened in the Southern Baptist Convention.

That continues to be loaded and enough of a thicket for folks like Lee Saunders and William Thornton of this board, to 30 years after continue to be in the fog on the matter. And they were much closer to it all than Jonathan Yardley.

Let the conversation continue. If N.C.'s Joe Ferguson is still living he can help as can Ellen Rosenberg. Even the Post's Tom Edsall coulda helped his former colleague Yardley with his stout but misbegotten paragraph, dismissing Wyerich as little more than Paul Pressler's answer to Jimmy Allen and James Dunn. (they weren't named) but we Baptists know that story, the few of us who understand it rightly.

Stay tuned.

Hope informed folks engage Balmer's two upcoming workshops at the Atlanta CBF. I hope to be there to facilitate as much misunderstand as possible and hound whatever ignorance presents itself (ha).

Pressler and Mo. Synods Otten

Likewise, Sandy, you may like my History Take on this board, comparison and speculation re Pressler and Missouri Synod's Otten. I have a link for you there.

As for Charles Marsh, don't worry about him, he'll be speaking Sunday at National Presbyterian on Nebraska Street in D.C. I've contacted several members of Congressional Staff so he will have a worthy hearing..

Glad you got 40 minutes in some time back; and of course you remember his Father's address to the leadership of 2nd Ponce De Leon, Atlanta in the late 80s on the fundamentalist takeover of the SBC.

And there is this Adelle Banks review as well.

Both miss what Pressler and the Birch Society with Jesse Helms and Albert Lee Smith did to Carter. Tom Edsall nailed it and I asked Carter about it at the Bham CBF of 93
