RE: Definition of "Mainline" Protestant Denomination
I'd always heard this term defined by church history profs as relating to those groups who can trace their origins directly to one of the specific theological groups which emerged directly from the Reformation, Lutheran, Calvinist, Anabaptist and Anglican, as well as Separatists from the Anglican church which would include Congregationalists, Methodists and the original Baptists in America. Groups that split and splintered off of those are not part of the "mainline" of reformed theology, since they often are the result of the blending of two or more theological groupings.
In recent years, denominations which have aligned with the National and World Council of Churches have been defined as "mainline."
