In spite of retired experts' views on Iran's possible manufacture, posession, or use of nuclear weapons, there is no doubt that Ahmadinejad looks, talks, and acts like a THUG.*

He evidently has never heard of the principle which restrained the USA and the USSR during their hottest cold-war periods: MAD.

MAD means "Mutually Assured Destruction" -- the idea that any national leader who flexes his muscles by using a nuclear weapon must recognize that the resulting response will almost certainly destroy himself and his nation. The "unexpected results" and "unintended consequences" -- the destruction of the world as we know it -- are simply the greatest deterrents for any thinking national leader to refrain from starting a nuclear war in which both sides are so armed.

I just saw an insightful film dealing with Carter and his book about the Arab-Israeli issues. He sees clearly the problem with Israel taking over the West Bank without any concerns for those who live there and have owned their house for some 300-400 years. Israel sees nothing wrong with an armed guard evicting the occupants and taking over. Carter certainly does!

This seems to be the next hotbed of conflict with a possible nuclear outcome.

It scares me to death to think of hot-heads in the Middle East having access to nuclear weapons and such a bind hatred for their enemies.

We are in deep trouble right now---and the reservations of US / Soviet face-offs of the past pale in comparison.

I am glad I live in a remote locaton capable of sustaining it's inhabitants through forrest and field as well as river for food. Were I a resident of the MIddle East or any major city in the US, I would be considering where to build my bomb shelter and how much food I should stock until the radiation reduces to a livable level!

Part of what scares me in this is that we seem to have very limited persuasive power with Israel. Iran is certainly a problem, but Israel seems to make things worse by its hardline approach. We may indeed have only minutes warning if Israel decides to execute a first strike.

Israel’s brutality vs the Palestinians is far greater than what Assad is doing now in Syria. Yet we wink at it.

It is sad, but true!

The brutal and constant hatred there is something no army can really solve. It seems to be the "spiritual problem of the centuries."

When Jesus advocated turning the other cheek, he was offering a solution to hatred. Failing to respond with the sword has worked with Ghandi and MLK. When you have the kind of outlook of the Middle East right now, the sword will follow the cheek turning and there is no conscience attached to it!

When it is done with "the blessing of God" it becomes even worse.

What can religious people do?

President Jimmy Carter set a precident, but both the Egyptian and Israeli participants in the peace accords are now asassinated. It is grounds for crying.
