Iraq War to End by December 31, 2011

The President today promised to bring home the troops from Iraq by the end of the year ending the Iraq War. It is a promise he made in his campaign and I'm glad to see him keep it.

From every soldier or former soldier to whom I have talked who has fought in Iraq, they are grateful. I was with two of them today. Neither said anything about politics in this.

I was chatting with my son on instant messenger today when I saw the headline. He's been in the Navy over 12 years now, deployed to the Middle East twice, his brother-in-law and several cousins have been over there in combat with the Army.
I asked him what he thought. I quote:

"ABOUT FREAKIN TIME!!!"

And if you don't thing we won't still be paying the bills for this war for a long time to come, just stop by your nearest Veteran's Administration Hospital for a few hours and take a look around.
Better yet, say "Thank You" by dropping off some warm clothing at your local Vet Center.

I walked the halls in Walter Reed two years ago. It was humbling to see all the vets there without limbs or with brain injuries trying to regain a chance at having a meaningful life. I still remember many of the faces I saw. Sadly, they will end up being cared for by an underfunded VA system that provides health care already for WW II, Korean, Vietnam, and Desert Storm along with other military actions across the years. The cost is often paid by vets for the remainder of their lives.

Since a Republican started the Iraq War, it's appropriate for a Democrat to end it. That way both parties can take credit and blame equally.
