GOP Prez Polls: No Clear Leader

Postby Sandy » Tue Sep 06, 2011 8:00 am

Rasmussen, RCP and several other composite polls have numbers running all over the place for GOP candidates. It appears that the "pack" has narrowed down to five of the most frequently mentioned names, and I'm guessing that they are probably in the top five because they are the ones the media has chosen to place their focus. Perry, Romney, Palin, Bachmann and Paul are the "big five," but if you add their numbers all together, only a slight majority of Republicans, about 55%, express a preference for any one of them. The rest of the pack, which includes long, long long shots like Giuliani and Gingrich, only garners another 12%, which means that about 33% of Republicans who answer polls are still looking for someone other than those in the current field. It also appears that the "other" Republican they are looking for may be the only one who has a real chance of winning in 2012, since none of the "big 5" have the kind of numbers they will need to beat the incumbent in 2012.

Perry, who has been the focus of most media attention in the past couple of weeks since he tossed his hat in, was running at about 38% for a while, but has settled back to around 25%. Romney is the next closest contender at a solid 18%, and Paul is the only other double digit preference at 11%. Palin and Bachmann pull down around 9% each, give or take a point or two here and there. Nationally, Romney and Perry look close, less than a 10% difference between them and the President, but in that state by state polling, all important because it is electoral votes that win the presidency, Obama has double digit leads in states that wield almost 300 electoral votes.

A very interesting development is occurring in Florida, a very important state that wields enough electoral votes to swing the election one way or the other. Florida is an necessity for any Republican who wants to win the White House, because California and New York are Democratic party certainties. All the talk flying around about Social Security being an "entitlement" program has benefitted the President in spite of a weak economy, and it may well be that Florida delivers for him, as his approval numbers are slowly climbing in the Sunshine state.

As I have said many places on this board, Frank Page should address Posner and Bulter's concerns in Alarms and Denials at www.religiondispatches.org how SBC Peace Committee member Charles Pickering of the Alliance Defense Fund has shifted the fulcrum of church state discussion with GOP embracing Far Right Religion to get through their Primary Process.

Instead of polls, the spotlight should be on Frank Page and Jim Demint; their coagulation of Redeemer Prez, and Taylors FBC about five miles in geography and the next room in ideological hardwiring as it effects the public square.
