FEMA Broke

Postby Dave Roberts » Wed Aug 31, 2011 3:59 pm

I'm hearing today that FEMA has no more money for natural disaster assistance, and that Republicans say they will not approve funds for current disasters until Democrats are willing to accept cuts to some of their "sacred cows." Is this the model of government we want for our country?

It seems the impetus for this is coming from VA Congressman Eric Cantor. At least he is consistent. Hope his own district which took damage both in the earthquake and from Irene will decide it's time he became unemployed in 2012.

In theory, you are supposed to buy insurance to take care of your property damage because those wonderful corporations that hire you pay you enough to afford the exhorbatant, profiteering rates because everyone who is willing to work has a job, right? So there is no need for FEMA because you are being taken care of by your fair, equitable, business employer who has put yours and your family's needs above their profit motive. You should also be paid enough to take care of the higher property taxes you will have to pay because the local governments will be responsible for taking care of the cleanup and repairing the infrastructure. That way, when trucks, trains and planes need to roll to carry the goods produced by those corporate entities who are loopholed out of paying taxes, they can get going in a hurry to keep the profits rolling in so that your corporate employer can write your paycheck.

That's Cantor's view in a nutshell. Of course, his "principles" will go out the window when he is either defeated or leaves Congress. Wanna bet he continues to collect the pension?

The idea is interesting--but who insures roads, bridges, water systems that require purging to clean bacteria from stagnant water, public safety agencies who use 1,000 gallons of diesel to keep generators humming, and hospitals who also use large quantities of diesel keeping their facilities open. That seems more a FEMA function than just helping a homeowner who happened not to be insured. Also, FEMA tends to help small businesses who frequently lose their entire inventory like fishermen and processing plants along the coast who lost everything when the storm hit.

i have a couple of neighbors who would like to sue Dominion VA Power for leaving trees one-sided when trimmed by the power lines. They are the trees that fell in the off-balance direction. However, they are also protected under the law.

The GOP is the most compassionate group we have---second only to the Tea Party!!! :horse:

Isn't it amazing that we can ramp up Middle East War / send all kinds of help to Japan and its earthquake---and :horse: about the needs of citizens who pay their taxes and just work without special Congressional concessions over their taxes like large Corporations and the Rich!!!!

That's why the poor and needy gladly left England and Europe for a fresh start---turned into :horse: by those who now are saying we are out of money for natural disaster relief!!!!

Anyone for a new ship and new land???? Or just put Term Limits on the ballot and make the rich re-buy their legislators every 3 terms!!!! Vote the dogs out of the house and let them get wet in the storm like I just did.

The FEMA housing inspector has left me a message yesterday and I am anticipating his visit today or tomorrow.

If they were really broke, it would not be happening as it is!!!!!

I can assure you that the Power Company tree trimers are hired under a contract which specifies the feet of clearance expected. I own the private company and have a climber who works for a utility contractor so I know whereof I speak.

Otherwise, they have expensive equipment and pay their men next to nothing and they give them little or no training except in safty issues = if you fall, I fired you before you hit the ground!!!

The slaves are just grunting through their hot day with little or no appreciation from the company. They are pushed to get so many miles of line cleared in a day. This leaves them not caring about the future of the tree. In fact, a badly pruned tree left when it should have been removed is nothing more than job security for them!!!!

The proper line clearance is funded by your power bill. If you want it better, then hire a professional and find out how much money is required to keep trees properly pruned or removed. Everyone wants something for nothing!!!!
