Roger Olson posted a perceptive piece about our public discourse in this country lately.
By "family" he means the larger community not the traditional family (mm-dad-siblings)
Now he correctly points out that the individual-focussed do not see themselves as selfish but put forth the view that society benefits by the individual striving involved.
In my view (family-focussed or better yet world community-focussed), the individualistic have a lot to prove before they can claim their viewpoint results in a better world. Right now the more communty-focussed countries are winning in terms of . Think Scandavania & the US vs Africa and the "-stans". Even in Scandanavian countries and the US, motivation to have more than what is doled out publically keeps the benefits of individualism operative while mainatining a safety net to move extreme poverty/bad health to barely living.
