Hershael York, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor, following eyewitness accounts of Paul's anti-Christian activities while a student at Baylor.

I could not have made up this saga if I had wanted to do so! :o

It deeply saddens me to remember what was once my alma mater. Now it's in the hands of folks who give it constant black eyes.

Good heavens. Now we have two candidates trying to out "Christianize" the other. Even worse, we have Baptist profs and ministers involving themselves in the political process.

Maybe a little John Leland reminder would help ... why does the faith of any candidate matter since we are electing representatives to handle secular matters, not guard our orthodoxy.

“Government has no more to do with the religious opinions of men than it has with the principles of mathematics. Let every man speak freely without fear, maintain the principles that he believes, worship according to his own faith, either one God, three Gods, no God or twenty Gods; and let government protect him in so doing, i.e., see that he meets with no personal abuse, or loss of property, for his religious opinions....”
--- John Leland, Colonial Virginia Baptist minister and religious liberty advocate, The Rights of Conscience Inalienable, 1791 pamphlet.

It’s interesting to see what Obama was doing in college. At page 100 of Dreams from My Father (paperback) describing his time at Occidental College, Obama, to prove his loyalty to blackness, wrote that he chose as friends the more politically active black students, foreign students, Chicanos, Marxist professors, structural feminists and punk rock performance poets. The term he used to describe his “crowd” was alienated, “resisting bourgeois society’s stifling constraints.” He wrote, “… it remained necessary to prove which side you were on … .” This “class” approach smacked of victimization and may be the driving force in Obama’s world, characterized by some as Marxist or socialist. So…might one see Paul in a better light socio-politically than Obama with regard to college days? If Paul was a psycho/liar/atheist/agnostic/Baptist-baiter, what does that make Obama?

Whatever comes out of Tuesday's election, we will be faced with 2 years of Congressional posturing to see who can create the best sound bites on which to run. In these days of interminable election cycles fed by the media, I think we need a six-year, one-term President, four-year House seats limited to no more than three consecutive terms, and eight-year Senate seats limited to no more than two consecutive terms. Then we would have some real turnover in seats other than to few volitale districts in play. I am in a House district where the incumbent wins big every time, and opponents don't stand much of a chance. It would be nice if the seat were in play every dozen years of so.

I favor keeping the term-lengths as they are with the president’s already established at two, the House at four, and the Senate at two. A senator with an eight-year term is scary. That should give all the characters enough time to rake in enough cash + their already out-sized pensions to take it easy for the rest of their lives. This won’t happen since a two-thirds vote in Congress is needed for an amendment proposal, and these guys are not about to vote themselves out of office. The proposal would have to come from two-thirds of the state legislatures, also hard to manage. Approval by three-fourths of the states would be necessary to ratify. The Congress exhibited its exponential hypocrisy when it proposed the presidential term-limit in 1947 (ratified in 1951) but effected no such constraint upon itself.
