"In Norfolk, Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) hastily called a news conference with two congressional Democrats, two congressional Republicans and the Democratic mayors of Norfolk and Suffolk, designed to show bipartisan opposition to the proposed closure of the U.S. Joint Forces Command, one of the Pentagon's 10 combat installations.

McDonnell and others insisted that their opposition was not just about retaining local jobs but about maintaining national security. They said the installation plays a key role in training military personnel to work together, boosting efficiency.

"To take and dismantle the Joint Forces Command -- an effective, efficient, low-cost joint command between all of our services -- I believe is extremely shortsighted and not in the interests of the United States, our national security or Virginia," McDonnell said.


Republicans are always for lower taxes and less government , except when it's THEIR pork!

It's hilarious watching all these Repubs running around trying to find a way to fight the closing. The very people who, for years, wanted "less government." Now, they are getting just what they deserve.

Back in the day (the 40s) when I spent time in Norfolk, sailors were placed by its citizens on roughly the same level as dogs and invited out to somewhere else on a daily basis. If nothing has changed, the governor might be unhappy but the citizens of Norfolk will breathe a huge sigh of relief, though they did appreciate taking in all the tar-cash they could.

Even Democrat Jim Webb is raising a stink about this. I don't think his heart is in it. But it's what his constituents expect him to do, so he's playing the role.

The JFCOM wastes billions of dollars. Let's close it and get on with our lives. Ft. Monroe, Virginia was a "country club" for high ranking officers for almost 50 years. Glad to see it close, and save some money. PORK in my backyard is still pork.
