The Atlantic article

From Gerry Milligan...Allow me to apologize that I do not know how to do one of those "Blue Clickie Things." The article in The Atlantic is: The Deepening Crisis in Evangelical Christianity; Support for Trump comes at a high cost for Christian witness. Maybe one who is more computer savvy than I am (99% of the population) could do this for me.

Glad to help Gerry.
The Deepening Crisis in Evangelical Christianity

Good article. Good summary quote:

Why are those who have been on the vanguard of “family values” so eager to give a man with a sordid personal and sexual history a mulligan?

Part of the answer is their belief that they are engaged in an existential struggle against a wicked enemy—not Russia, not North Korea, not Iran, but rather American liberals and the left.

Fear of "American liberals and the left” has been added to the gospel and in many cases supersedes the energy of these evangelicals.

Also important (from the Atlantic article):
Many evangelical Christians are also filled with grievances and resentments because they feel they have been mocked, scorned, and dishonored by the elite culture over the years.

I’ll add that I-Love-Trump attitudes in the evangelical world are accelerating the mockery (and rightfully so, imo).

I just read it and started a separate stream in politics unaware you had posted the link. Metaxas and Ed Young and Ted Cruz are tied at the hip a straight line to Nixon's Southern Strategy through Harry Dent. William Thornton and Sandy are gonna wanna keep an eye out for upcoming edition for Christian Ethics Today cause what they diss here at bl dot com is about to go to print for posterity.

And KeithE

Postby Stephen Fox » Mon Jul 08, 2019 6:22 pm

About a month ago several children at the Pig in Collinsville said they met you in Gadsden or Huntsville Chic Fil a or Arbys and you asked about me. I meant to say something earlier. I think it was the state soccer semis or something. Locals got some xenophobic treatment when they played Whitesburg. Almost made an al.com story.

Metaxas’s quote is underlined below:

Many white evangelical Christians, then, are deeply fearful of what a Trump loss would mean for America, American culture, and American Christianity. If a Democrat is elected president, they believe, it might all come crashing down around us. During the 2016 election, for example, the influential evangelical author and radio talk-show host Eric Metaxas said, “In all of our years, we faced all kinds of struggles. The only time we faced an existential struggle like this was in the Civil War and in the Revolution when the nation began … We are on the verge of losing it as we could have lost it in the Civil War.”

It typifies the martyrdom attitude of the religion-politico evangelicals.

The soccer team I met at a Taco Bell in Huntsville maybe three months ago. One young gal pointed out the Whitesburg Christian Academy people were racist wrt the mostly hispanic Collinsville team.

The Huntsville Chic Fil was that chance meeting of you, me and Mark Ray probably about 10 years ago.

The Gadsden meeting was in a Hospital waiting room where my daughter was and I talked to a black lady who worked at a Mapco in Collinsville that you frequent.

Another time about a year ago, at a Burger King when I was driving thru Collinsville, I asked about you and they knew you.

Yet another time probably 20-25 years ago a young man singing in a visiting choir (from Virginia I believe) and was sleeping at our house and asked about you (his dad a CBF pastor) knew you.

Once your sister came to our church and I talked with her.

All very coincidental. Huntsville is about 80 miles away from Collinsville. When I meet someone from Collinsville, I ask about you and invariably they know of you. You are famous!
