House Chaplain Who Prayed About GOP Tax Bill Fired By Paul Ryan

The Hill reported that four different sources ― two Democrats and two Republicans ― said Conroy was told he had to quit or he would be fired. There’s been no reason given for why he was let go, but Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) tells HuffPost that his GOP colleagues have pointed him to a prayer that {Chaplain Patrick Patrick} Conroy made on the House floor last fall amid the debate on the GOP tax bill.

The Prayer:
The Chaplain, the Reverend Patrick J. Conroy, offered the following prayer:

God of the universe, we give You thanks for giving us another day. Bless the Members of this assembly as they set upon the work of these hours, of these days. Help them to make wise decisions in a good manner and to carry their responsibilities steadily, with high hopes for a better future for our great Nation.

As legislation on taxes continues to be debated this week and next, may all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle. May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans.

May Your blessing, O God, be with them and with us all this day and every day to come, and may all we do be done for Your greater honor and glory.

Amen.

Like some herein, Ryan doesn’t want to face these facts (or anyone who speaks these truths).

In fairness to Ryan:
1) The Washington Times (not Post) is quoting a Ryan spokeswoman as saying that is not the reason.
House chaplain Rev. Patrick Conroy forced out by Paul Ryan.
Ryan spokeswoman Ashlee Strong would not reveal the speaker’s reasons for forcing Conroy out. A top Democrat, Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, said he believes it was because of a prayer Conroy gave during last fall’s tax debate urging that lawmakers not “pick winners and losers” but spread its benefits equitably.
Strong said that was not the reason.

We are waiting for that reason.

2) Ryan is a believer in Trickle Down Economics. However, it is clear that trickle down has not work:
In Reagan's and Bush Jr’s time: Why Trickle Down Economic Works in Theory But Not in Fact

Trickle-down economics says that the Reagan and Bush tax cuts should have helped people in all income levels. Instead, the opposite occurred. Income inequality worsened. Between 1979 and 2005, after-tax household income rose 6 percent for the bottom fifth. That sounds great until you see what happened for the top fifth. Their income increased by 80 percent. The top 1 percent saw their income triple. Instead of trickling down, it appears that prosperity trickled up.

And from a global perspectives, an IMF global study says Trickle down economics is wrong, says IMF

Raising up the poor appears to have a dramatic effect: A 1% increase in the income share of the bottom quintile results in a 0.38% increase in GDP. Meanwhile, a 1% increase in the income share of the top 20% results in a 0.08% decrease in GDP growth.

---
News today:
In Trump’s time: Bureau of Economic Analysis Out this morning
Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in the first quarter of 2018 (table 1), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter, real GDP increased 2.9 percent.

GDP is not a good indicator of benefits balanced and shared by all Americans (as the Chaplain prayed for), but it appears that there will be big benefits for the rich and corporations while government revenues will drop ("at least 4%, probably 5 or 6%” GDP growth was assumed by Trump) and government spending is increasing under Trump as well (see attached).

I'm betting most pastors then are going to get less than a 2% tax cut, probably less than a 1.5% tax cut. Wow! so worth it for evangelical pastors who supported the GOP. :brick:

I guess "benefits balanced and shared by all Americans" isn't a GOP value. Nor is religious freedom.

In fairness, Ryan insisted he come back, saying it was his (Ryan's) duty because it was for the good of the House. I think a whole lot of GOP incumbents told him this would not help in November.

Every Baptist ought to be opposed to ceremonial religion represented by house and senate chaplains. It's the same principle as when Nixon had worship services in the White House East Room with guests chosen to say favorable words to his administration. Church and state entanglements and paid prophets risk the possibility of true religion.
