Payday Lenders Meet at Trump’s Doral

Postby KeithE » Mon Apr 23, 2018 6:22 am

Moving this Stephen Fox-discovered and Rvaughn-found article from the CBF Forum to here.

Payday Lenders Convening At A Trump Resort Are Met By Protesters

At Trump National Doral Golf Club near Miami this week, executives with the nation's payday loan industry are holding their annual conference with receptions, breakout sessions and a golf tournament.

This quote from the above link, is why Fox put it into the CBF Forum:
"Any way to gain access or curry favor, they're going to do," said Stephen Reeves, with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in Georgia, who came to protest outside the conference.

Two disgusting practices of Trump and his administration are lowlighted in this meeting of deplorables.
1. Payday lending is being re-invigorated and celebrated under Trump: Mulvaney ends consumer protection probe of payday loan collector

2. The President is profiting from being President. GOP-affiliated groups have spent more than $3 million at Trump properties since the 2016 election.
“To put that in perspective: All PACs, super PACs and party committees, combined, paid $237k to Trump properties over the 8yr period from Jan 2007 to Dec 2014,”

Sickening and everyone reading this should be up in arms!

I think moving the thread would have been a good idea. Doing it the way you did, Keith, orphaned several comments.

Well Mulvaney just came out and admitted what drives him (lobbyists who pay) and doesn’t drive him (lobbyists that have not paid him - i.e. consumers).

Mick Mulvaney Admits He Spoke Only To Lobbyists Who Paid Him

Mick Mulvaney, President Donald Trump’s budget director and the acting head of a top consumer watchdog group, raised eyebrows on Tuesday with an anecdote about his time in the House of Representatives.

“We had a hierarchy in my office in Congress,” he said at the American Bankers Association conference in Washington, according to The New York Times. “If you’re a lobbyist who never gave us money, I didn’t talk to you. If you’re a lobbyist who gave us money, I might talk to you.”

We simply need to outlaw (or at least limit) lobbyists and corporate “giving” beginning by signing and joining email list at Ending Citizen’s United. Citizens United (passed in Jan 2010) effectively enabled unlimited “gifts” from corporations with their special interests.

Last week Payday Lenders celebrated the relaxation of rules limiting their exploitation of the poor. They even got a party/golf tournament at Trump’s Doral.
