Well here again FoxNews/Tucker Carlson has misrepresented an American. This time a librarian in Cambridge MA.

Here is her (Liz Phipps Soeiro) letter thanking Melanie Trump for the gift but saying no thanks for two reasons:

(1) they are a rich school district and it would be better if her gifts went to more needy school districts

(2) she believed the Dr Seuss books has racial undertones and offered this defense (by Grace Hwang Lynch) of that view.

I have not read that defense (or comments to that defense) yet, so I will withhold judgement on whether or not Dr. Seuss should be a “new conservative to hate”. The books are good as I remember reading them to the kids 30 years ago and I did not detect any racial undertones but I wasn’t looking for them. So my going-in bias is that Dr. Seuss is just fine and the librarian is wrong (perhaps just protesting anything from a Trump).

As for the 2015 picture (if that is actually of Ms Soeiro), that is well before Ms. Lynch’s article (dated Sept 12, 2017 and cited by Ms. Soeiro on Sept 26, 2017) discussing the racial overtones in the Dr. Seuss books.

But I will say Tucker Carlson's sarcastic verse (while entertaining and given flawlessly) without giving Ms Soeiro’s view/letter a fair hearing is media malpractice (all too typical in the RW media).

I'm intrigued by one fact about this. It seems to have been released by the Trump administration and not by the librarian. At least all I have seen was on conservative websites and networks.

Yeah, of course Jon and all his conservative sources got this way, way wrong, out of context and didn't bother with any facts.

Interesting that this caring librarian wanted to keep such a book with racial undertones out of her library but is willing to send such things she deems junk to libraries less fortunate than hers.

Sounds like she wants to give the underprivileged Racist leaning and racist filled books.

Also interesting that she is willing to dress up and present herself as a racist character.

Interesting too, is your support for such a nice lady.

Geisel wrote some very offensively racist stuff during World War II. I have not yet read this recent article about racism in his Seuss books, but on the surface it strikes me as unlikely that they are racist in a way that would make The Cat in the Hat undesirable reading for grade schoolers. Or kindergartners. What I find objectionable is Melania's omission of the Horton books from her donation bag.

This article strikes me as a much more nuanced treatment of Geisel and race. In particular the suggestion that MacArthur nixed some of his work for being too sympathetic to the Japanese is intriguing.

Jon got this wrong too. Maybe he should actually read the articles before he jumps to conclusions.

BTW, that's a fake picture.

Sandy, what's your source on the fakeness of the photo?

There are several sources for several pictures. I do not see anyone but you saying it is fake.

I've read several articles.

The Mayor of Springfield, MA disagrees with the librarian. Inviters Trump to the town where the author was from and the Dr. Seusas museum is.

Here's another Image

Goofball librarian goes after First Lady over Cat-in-the-Hat etc. This has to be the dumbest antitrump straw that the trumphaters have grasped. You'd think that the trumphaters would pass on some of this stuff. It's not as if the president doesn't provide sufficient things worthy of legitimate criticism.

Agreed. It is somewhat entertaining though to see how looney many are. Obsessed may be a good word to use... even here.

I've got my gripes but I don't have any gumption to give the haters ammo to shoot anything. It is too fun to watch them shoot themselves.

Yeah, so I see this is going to be the new diversion around here. Everything goes to the ihatetrump barrel. After years of excoriating Obama, and criticizing what was mostly unimportant minutia, now that Trump has turned out to be a disastrous incompetent who is doing exactly what he, and his followers and supporters criticized in others, anyone who points out his hypocrisy, lies, flip flops, idocy, incompetence and general ineptness is just an ihatetrumper.

That must be a way to compensate for the trauma of the investigations into his corruption, and what lies ahead.

...the clock is ticking.
